Here's another useful URL

http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/

There are links here to 1890s maps of of every Scottish county, showing parishes.
Part of Ross and Cromarty is on the Hebrides map.

AG - 1841 is complete for all 33 parishes in Ross and Cromarty at FreeCEN.
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

They also put the same 10 folk in one household.

FreeCEN also has transcribed 1 1/2 W coast parishes plus 1 1/2 parishes on Lewis, all for 1851.

EDIT 1851 Curtin psh is also transcribed. Curtin itself is on the E edge of the psh, abt 10km W of Dingwall. The psh extends a further 40km to W, across the middle of the county.

Bear in mind that old parish records are patchy, and records of the people you want to find may no longer be in existence - or may not have existed in the first place.

To all of you who responded can only say many thanks indeed.
Looks like I may have caught a red herring or two so back to the drawing board.
Thanks again

The only Hector Munro marriage showing on SP, in the whole of Scotland 1766-88, was to a Janet McKenzie in 1782 - though it was in Rosskeen..

Doesn't look as if we're going to be able to help with your search for Hector, Brian.

Extremely vague possibility:

Hector Munro

in the 1841 Scotland Census
Name: Hector Munro
Age: 80
Estimated birth year: abt 1761
Gender: Male
Where born: Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
Civil Parish: Tain
County: Ross and Cromarty
Address: County Road
Parish Number: 82
Household Members:
Name Age
Hector Munro 80
Ann Munro 50

EDIT:
Well, no, probably not - that Ann Munro/Monro was probably born Cromarty 1789, and her mother was an Allison Ross.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Jul 2015 12:54

Presumably you got Christian's YOB of 1786 from the 1841 census, Brian?

Christian Menzies

in the 1841 Scotland Census
Name: Christian Menzies
Age: 55
Estimated birth year: abt 1786
Gender: Female
Where born: Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
Civil Parish: Rosskeen
County: Ross and Cromarty
Address: S Main St Bridge End
Parish Number: 81
Household Members:
Name Age
Mary Ross 40
Isabel Ross 5
Isabel Mckenzie 25
Christian Menzies 55
John Menzies 25
Hugh M Lean 25
Mary M Lean 25
Alexander M Lean 3
Hugh M Lean 2
Jessy M Lean 1

Without using credtis on SP to look at the image, I can't be sure that all those McLeans and Rosses are actually in the same household.

If this is the Christian Menzies you mean, then the John listed with her is her son.

His birth:

8/03/1815 MENZIES JOHN JOHN MENZIES/CHRISTY MUNRO FR 163 (FR163) M KILMUIR EASTER (ROSS AND CROMARTY) /ROSS AND CROMARTY 069/00 0010 0172

This is the only Christ* Munro with father Hector, born in a feasible year to have married in 1802, in Ross & Cromarty.

If that's her (and no reason to assume it is - "your" Christian married in Easter Kilmuir, which is about 15 miles away from Avoch as the crow flies, or via a ferry, and a whole lot further by road.) , her father must therefore have been born about 1765 at the very earliest, and quite possibly not alive by the time censuses started.

26/05/1782 MUNRO CHRISTIAN
Father: HECTOR MUNRO/ AVOCH /ROSS AND CROMARTY 059/00 0010 0081

Hector Munro is obviously a very popular name

Are you sure Christy's name was Matheson? Or perhaps she'd been married before?
This is the only Hector Munro/ Christ* marriage in Rosskeen in feasible year:

06/06/1851 MUNRO HECTOR CHRISTIAN MCLEAN/ M ROSSKEEN /ROSS AND CROMARTY 081/00 0020 0113

EDIT:
You're quite right, Mike, in your post below. Silly me!
