You'll have to get his proven next of kin to apply for them

If that isn't his widow, there will be a charge

WW2 records are still with the MOD and are not online.

Look here to find out how to order them. They will cost £30 and take quite a number of months to arrive:-

I have the service records of two great uncles (brothers). They are much older than Paul's father-in-law. Both served in WW1, and re-engaged for WW2.

In one case the WW2 info. was added to his earlier service. So was available when I paid & downloaded from the National Archives.
For the other there is a stamp at the bottom of his record from the NA which reads "RECORD TRANSFERRED to CARD as from 1 Jan 1929". To get the WW2 data I then had to apply - and it did take quite a while. But the data was well laid out, being typed instead of handwritten. Included a listing of ships and dates. Also his service medals, and the address to which they were sent. In turn that led to finding where he died and was buried. So for me it was well worth the wait/money.

You can print the application forms off, complete them on behalf of your mother-in-law, if she's still alive, and get her to sign them. They will be free of charge. If she isn't still alive then your wife can apply. I have just had the records for my father and father-in-law (got my husband to sign for his father's). ... I had to wait awhile though.

Good luck.
