Find Ancestors

Hello, I am wanting to find out details about my GG Grandfather Joseph McGregor. He appears in a census in 1841 6th June at Abbey Hill Brand Place Leith Midlothian Scotland and he is 15 and an apprentice joiner. He is with his father John McGregor born around, 1808, an upholsterer.

Joseph obviously moves to Durham City and I am unable to find a marriage certificate but his first wife Margaret Unknown maiden name, dies in 1851. He marries his next door neighbour Hannah Plimmer in 1852 and they have four children all living in Durham City England. Joseph dies in Aug 1896.
I would be very grateful if anyone has any other information they could share with us. We have come to a real dead end. Many thanks, Anne

There's only one marriage in Scotland, 1841-51 of a Joseph McGregor (or alternate spelling) to a Margaret - but it's in Aberdeenshire, which seems very unlikely to be the right one.

I don't see Joseph's birth in Midlothian.

You say his father was born c1808, and the 1841 census says c.1806.
Either of these could perhaps be his birth, in that case:

Thank you for those leads. I have stumbled across those myself with the exception of the Margaret in Derby. We seem to have come to a dead end regarding Joseph's ancestors in Scotland. I was rather hoping to find details of his first marriage to Margaret in the hope that it might have some more information about his father. thank you for all of your help, Anne

West Derby is in Lancashire, not Derbyshire :)

Do you have a copy of the cert of the second marriage?

As 1841 does not record relationships, you can't be sure that John was Joseph's father without other evidence to back up the assumption

1841 rounded down ages of over-15's.

John's birth could have been any time between 1801 and 1806.........not later
