I expect this is the couple from the 1862 marriage of an Ann Walton to a John Fletcher posted by Malyon - born Yorkshire, so not the one you are looking for.

Thanks for all the help so far. By the 1871 census, a Nancy Walton is married to my relative William Dowson, and as far as I can tell from the Marriage in 1862, and the census in 1881, this is a census error, as William married Ann Walton (Teesdale 10a 269).

But I can't find a Nancy or an Ann the right age in 1861. I hadn't thought to actually follow potential people backwards and forwards to see if they appear or not. Will add it to my growing list of searching tips, useful for a novice like me!

The Margaret Ann Walton you appear to refer to in the 1861 census in Barnard Castle is shown to have been born in Barnard Castle and can seemingly be found in Durham in 1851 - on both occasions b 1842 Barnard Castle, so not the same person.

One of these should be her birth registration which would give you parents names - father's if known and mothers maiden name if married.

Have you confirmed that John is her Father? If so, what records have you used. As you say, he is shown as unmarried in 1851 and the 1841 census does not show relationships.

Have you checked marriages and deaths in the area?

Unknown Report 7 Jul 2015 16:03

Yes, this is the correct family. I have not as yet looked into who Ann's mother is, as she is not listed on the 1841 or 1851 census, and as shown in the above reply, John is recorded as unmarried.

At present, I'm just trying to find Ann in 1861 to complete my census records for her, but if you are able to shed any light on her mother, that would help me in future research sessions.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

I cannot find Ann Walton in the 1861 census. I have managed to find a Margaret Ann Walton as a visitor in Barnard Castle, which could be her, but there has been no reference to her being called Margaret at any point up till now.

She is not at home with her dad and uncle in 1861.

Ann Walton, Born between 1838 and 1840 in Mickleton, Teesdale, and is living with her Dad (John Walton, born 1806) in 1841, and her Grandmother, Dad and extended family in 1851.

Can anyone find a more likely match? And is Margaret a variant of Ann, which could explain why the house she has visited has recorded her name as this?

Many thanks,

Sarah
