Im looking to find the name of a relative on 1911 census . She is the granddaughter of George and Rebecca Cooper of Wickhambrook Suffolk, she was 9 on the census. Her name looks like Etty, but I can't find this name on any birth records. If anyone can make out a different name or find the records for Etty, I would be most grateful.

I think she's the daughter of George & Rebecca's daughter Alice.

In 1901 Alice is married, surname Cook:

Alice Cook

In 1911 she's single, and back to Cooper:

Alice's younger daughters seem to have been born as Cooper, in Kent -
Rose in Ashford, and Violet and Ruby in Folkestone.

So -

Violet Maud Cooper

Yes I have that information Argyllgran. It is a bit of a mystery this one.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jun 2015 17:00

Possible for Alice's marriage - though a long way from home - but the only one on FreeBMD between an Alice Cooper (she had no middle name per her birth and all censuses) and a Cook, between 1891 and 1901:

Marriages Sep 1899 (>99%)
Cook Walter Ecclesall B. 9c 487
Cooper Alice Ecclesall B. 9c 487

And Walter's death:

Deaths Jun 1900 (>99%)
Cook Walter 27 Risbridge 4a 445

Mind you, it then looks as if none of Alice's children were Walter's.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jun 2015 17:06

This is the only Henrietta Cooper born anywhere in England at about the right time - though a year out from the school record:

Births Jun 1902 (>99%)
COOPER Henrietta Wellingbro' 3b 143

Jackie

Jackie Report 28 Jun 2015 17:31

1901 census says Alice was married, but Walter died in 1900, so she would of been a widow on census?

malyon

malyon Report 28 Jun 2015 17:50

rosetta can be shortend to etta

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jun 2015 20:31

Whether Alice was described as married or a widow could have depended on the enumerator.

He would have been told she was George's daughter, so perhaps he assumed she was married because of the different surname.
Or maybe George said she was married, to explain the different name.

By 1911 she describes herself as single, and has reverted to her maiden name. Maybe she thought of herself as single, as the marriage had been so short (less than a year) , and all her children do seem to have been by another man - or perhaps several.

In 1911, although three children are listed with her, she has had four children, all still living, which is also why I think Etty is hers - irrespective of whether or not either Alice Eddy R Cook or Edith Kate Cooper is the correct child or not..
