don't get too frustrated with that Ellis Island site!!

They "upgraded" it about a year ago, and it is not as easy to use as it was!

You can check the Ellis Island yourself .............

http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/

you have to register, but it is free

be warned, when you get to this line

Candy, William M.
1909
England, Tomwack
Panama

you will see 3 icons.

Click on Passenger Record to see what Yvonne posted above. It does say 37y on that

Click on Ship Manifest to see what it says ................. BUT this is where I had difficulty!!

It says first image 402 and second image 403................ the manifest covers 2 pages but 403 is not the second page, it actually has no connection to image 402

Click on image 402, scroll down to see it, then look to the right hand side of the page, and see an arrow pointing up above the icon for 402. That leads you to image 401 which is the first page!

Thanks Sylvia. Yvonne-- is his age definitely 37,I suppose it could be a mistake on the passenger list, he was born in 1862.

The image at Ellis Island is a bit hard to read ....... and find!!

It states that he is "In Transit to Liverpool"

and he says he is an "Eng. Prof" ...... I think that means a Professional Engineer

Was Emile Fleuriel French??

There would be no passenger lists if they went to France ............... and it is very possible that they did leave the country as it was a huge disgrace for a woman to divorced for adultery back then.

there are passenger lists for a number of William Candys going to and from Argentina

these seem to be livestock dealers and exporters.

no sign of either Anna or her husband on the passenger lists

Any help much appreciated, trying to find.....

William Malcombe Candy born 1st May 1862, baptised 12 Jan 1863 St Mary the Virgin Church, Felpham, Sussex.

He is the son of Rev Henry Houston Candy and Anna Matilda ( nee Oliver)

In 1871 Anna is listed as a widow living with her son in Kent, in fact she is separated from her husband and later goes on to marry Emile Fleuriel in March 1875.

Can anyone find any trace of William and his mother and new husband on any census after 1871
Many thanks
