Hello and welcome Graeme

Can you tell us where you have looked for information, and how you have the information about Benjamin (from a census?)

and if you are asking for help from other members, did you mean to say 'please'?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 15 Jun 2015 02:40

had you looked at familysearch.org?

This seems a rather likely match for your info

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNDF-FHW

Name: Benjamin Rayner
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 08 Dec 1787
Christening Place: Thornage, Norfolk, England
Father's Name: John Rayner
Mother's Name: Mary Williams

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 15 Jun 2015 02:49

you will find a very large number of christenings of other children of the couple by searching for Rayner baptisms in Thornage Norfolk with parents John and Mary, 1780-1800

there is a 1783 marriage there of John Rayner to Mary William*son* in Kelling that is likely the right couple

Kelling and Thornage appear to be about 5 miles apart

I understand what you are saying Joonie.

When I first started out on here I didn't have a clue. Even when I was pointed to FamilySearch and FreeBmD, I didn't know how to search.

Once information was posted for me, I was then able to double check the info and begin working things out for myself.

That's my reason behind it.......And It's always best to double check any info posted anyway. :-)

To JoonieCloonie and PricklyHolly, sorry I omitted to say "please" in my request. What two remarkable people you are. I thank you for the information you have sent and will take time to go through it. I have information going back to my great grandfather, Benjamin Adam RAYNER 1832 to 1911 who married Mary Ann HARROD 1835 to ? in 1859. Then it becomes vague to great, great, grandfather Benjamin RAYNER 1789 or 1791 to 1862 and his wife Mary (maybe PEARCE 1793 to 1874.
Thanking you both again.

I have double checked the image of the 1851 census.

Adam's son transcribed as Ball (Born abt 1822 Field Dalling, Norfolk)...... actually reads Bell.

I believe he is Benjamin Bell Rayner who married in 1852.

My name is Graeme Rayner, I live in Australia, and I'm trying to trace
back the RAYNER family to my great, great, great, grandfather. At the same
time I'm trying to connect with Captain Richard Woodget (Cutty Sark), who
was a second cousin to my grandfather.

This is as far as I can go from my grandfather - Walter Rayner 1874 to
1949 married Sophia Lawrence 1877 to 1964. - Benjamin Adam Rayner 1832 to
1911 married Mary Ann Harrod 1835 to ?. - Benjamin Rayner 1789 to 1862
married Mary A ? 1793 to 1874.

JoonieCloonie Report 16 Jun 2015 16:45

Hi again Graeme and you're very welcome :-)

for your 'second cousin' query, this chart is very useful

http://www.cousincouples.com/?page=relation

true second cousins share great-grandparents - their grandparents were siblings, their parents were first cousins ... but people often say 'second cousin' when they mean 'first cousin once removed' or the like

so when you say second cousin, is it your understanding that your grandfather and Captain Richard Woodget had grandparents who were siblings?

to have that precise a relationship pinned down, someone must have known what the relationship was!

as Chris has found, Richard's parents were Richard Woodgate and Cecilia, so the connection could be through either one of them

and then it could be through either one of his father's parents or either one of his mother's parents - one of those people was a sibling of your grandfather ... if the connection is with the Rayner line

This looks like the marriage of the parents of Capt Woodget:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXNX-LHH

Name: Richard Woodgate
Spouse's Name: Celia Gage
Event Date: 21 Nov 1831
Event Place: St. Margaret'S, Lynn, Norfolk, England

so possibly one of their mothers was a Rayner ...

in fact there were two Ms Rayner + Mr Gage marriages about at that same time in Norfolk (again from familysearch)

Charlotte Rayner
marriage: 28 July 1827
Beeston, Norfolk, England
spouse: William Gage

Mary Elizabeth Rayner
marriage: 29 October 1831
Lammas, Norfolk, England
spouse: James Gage

so ... I wonder whether the relationship was rather in-laws

if Capt Woodget's mother's brothers married Rayners, for instance

do you know the names Charlotte Rayner and Mary Elizabeth Rayner from that period?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 16 Jun 2015 16:51

Name: Charlotte Rayner

Name: Mary Elizabeth Rayner
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 25 Apr 1810
Christening Place: Lammas with Little Hautbois, Norfolk, England
Father's Name: John Rayner
Mother's Name: Anne

John and Ann also seem to have had children

John Benjamin
George William
Henry Charles

is one of them your ancestor?

if so it would seem that Capt Woodget may have been a son of your ancestor's sister's sister-in-law. :-)
(but there could be a connection in the previous generation that would make them blood relations)

(those relationships can be very fun to trace ... the family of my great-grandfather's sister's in-laws have given me years of entertainmnet!)
