If you know which shipping company the ships belonged to, perhaps they could help you from their records - though I don't know how far back their records would go..

Could try searching for Lloyds Lists

Lloyd's List is a British publication that gives details of vessel movements, marine casualties, and other information of interest to the merchant shipping community.

Unfortunately research so far only gives results to the mid 1920s. It might be included in the British Newspaper Archives.

Thank you so much MarieCeleste we got his records and my friend is so happy and excited to get them. Your help is much appreciated!

We now know what ships he was on and when. Is there anyway of finding out where the ships went when he was on them?

thanks
Katy

Shirley, when it comes to seaman's pouches anyone who is prepared to pay for the digitization of the records can buy them - I did.

Granted, it is different for MoD records.

its only next of kin that can apply for service records so his daughter will have to apply together with his death cert and proof of her family tie

Well, his DoB was certainly useful in identifying the seaman's record on the link I posted above.

Katy, a couple of years ago I got a quote for a "pouch" to be digitised - I think it was about £35 (it can vary depending on the number of pages). It was well worth it for the information it contained.

Thank you for your help.

A tree on ancestry has this death for him. There is nothing to substantiate this though.

As he may well be living, you should remove his DOB

No death for him on FMP

You can request a quotation to have his "seaman's pouch" digitised by National Archives:
