William Best born c1693 Cornwall

It is a long shot but I am trying to find his father.
It could be George born 1665, or it could be a son of Richard b1623 or Roger b1629 or none of these.
I really don't know how to go back that far.
I am going to visit the area in Cornwall where I think he was born to see if I can look up any records in a weeks time.
Advice please, do you think the records office in Truro would be a good place to start, unless by some miracle one of you marvellous people find it for me.
I really do appreciate all the help I have had over the years from all the genes community. Thank you Dorothy <3

Richard would have been 70 when William was born and Roger 64. which is quite old for fatherhood in those days

Not sure they are in the frame

Thank you everyone for looking for me.
I should have said I think the family is from the Helland/ Blisland/ Bodmin area,
so Padstow will be out.

I'm sure Mike is on the right track having found William b1693 parents.
I still have to tie John Best b1648 into my other bit of the tree and wonder if any one can find him being born to William b1604 and Joan or Jana Dodge b1596 , both from Blisland. I think the dates and the area are what make me feel this could be right.
The other children I have born to William and Joan are Richard b1623, George b1626, Roger b1629, Joan b1632, Margaret b1635, and Lowdy b1639. Thanks ever so much. Dorothy

Thank you for confirming this Mike.
The only bit I need now is that William Best and Jane Dodge also had a child John born about 1648 in Blisland, Cornwall.

This would be the last bit of my 5 year jigsaw.

My thanks again to all you wonderful people who give your time up to help others.
regards, Dorothy

Hi
There are two places you might wish to visit here in Cornwall - one is the Records Office which is in Truro and the other is the Cornish Studies Library in Redruth. Both places are helpful but I suggest looking at their websites before you visit Cornwall to see what they hold, opening hours etc. I have used the Records Office for other research but needed to make an appointment as there is limited space.
Good luck with your research and I hope the weather is kind to you!

Chris and Cassie, Thank you so much for all your information. I had a great week in Cornwall, fantastic weather. Rented a little cottage by the church in Blisland. What a beautiful church, if you ever have time please go to see it. Went to Truro records office and found lots that confirmed what I already have, but still looking for John.
Thanks for the links Chris, I'm still working on them.
You are both wonderful for helping.
Regards,
Dorothy

Dorothy for a couple married in 1622 to have had a child in 1648 would be pushing it a little ... not impossible but not probable

especially since:

Jana Dodge b1596

which would make her 52 in 1648

so I would really say you can rule them out

William and Jane's children from Freereg were

1 Baptisms * Apr 1623 BEST Richard Cornwall Blisland
2 Baptisms 04 Oct 1629 BEST Roger Cornwall Blisland
3 Baptisms 07 Oct 1632 BEST Joan Cornwall Blisland
4 Baptisms 27 Sep 1634 BEST Margaret Cornwall Blisland
5 Baptisms 04 Jun 1639 BEST Lowdy Cornwall Blisland

the next Best baptism shown after that was

5 Baptisms 03 Feb 1649/50 BEST Margaret Cornwall Blisland

daughter of Francis and Susane

in fact Jane seems to have died in 1644 ... already widowed

I've never been able to do the math with the old dating system, but I think this death (below, William) would have been before that one (above, Jane) (the year didn't change until the end of March)

Have you said where the info about John c1848's existence/dob came from?

Dorothy

Dorothy Report 15 Jun 2015 18:44

Thank you so much JoonieCloonie for taking the time to do more research for me.
The info about John born c1648 came from a post from Mike, (see above) he said it was from a tree on Ancestry?

I have just found the site freereg, and there are loads of Best's on there.
It will take me ages to get through them all.

Thank you again for helping me,
with regards,
Dorothy

Chris gave directions to both freereg and the Cornwall OPC site before me, remember!

I tend to neglect freereg myself, even though a couple of my best finds have been there.

Since I have a Cornwall focus, I tend to rely too heavily on the OPC site, which has significant gaps.

If you're interested, the OPC site is always looking for volunteers to transcribe parish records. It's very easy to do, and if you're really lucky you might get an area you are interested in. It all depends on what films the group has access to.

and sorry, I didn't follow along well - it was William you were actually asking about to start, not John :-)
