That will is certainly my man and the right family. Thanks, that's really helpful. The 1851 C showing the family as "purritt" is Dorothy as the children name and births are correct. She has herself down as farmers wife but no farmer to be found 1851 or 1861 except for him with his parents as a fish monger and "single" in the 1851 C
As you say they don't always tell the truth!
I think the CF Porritt married to Grace Ann is someone different as he is not in farming and birth place too different.
Have found possible deaths for Dorothy 1902 at South Shields Durham and 1899 at Hartlepool, Durham. For CF there is the 1886 Berwick death and also 1882 death at Gateshead Durham. Thank you all for your help an amazing community :-D

Thank you all.
My ancestor is Henry Porrit son of Dorothy and CF Porritt born 1842. The family are all farmers which ties in with the marriage of Dorothy and CF. We have Proctors on the other side of the family but they all come from the same area so interesting that a Proctor witnessed the wedding.
I can find no death for Dorothy so can't work out if CF Porritt married again.
If the 1851 census showing CF as unmarried and a fish monger is correct that is odd. The parents names are correct but he married in 1838 and they had children in 1840 and 1842. Why is CF not on the 1851 or 1861 census with Dorothy and the children?
I did look at the CF Porritt married to Grace Ann Denham in 1874. He may have re married if Dorothy died and there is quite an age difference between him and Grace Ann. However their children are all born before their marriage even though they have the wife's family name, Denham, so can't be Dorothy's children. This also means that there is no farming connection as he was a house agent so I don't think that this is the same Christopher Fairfoot Porritt. Isn't it frustrating when people just disappear or someone has exactly the same name and similar birth date!
Thank you all.

David

David Report 26 Apr 2015 19:13

Hi
I am trying to find out what happened to Christopher Fairfoot Porritt and wife Dorothy Crawford. I think that :
Christopher Fairfoot Porritt was born around 1814 son of Henry Porritt b1762 / 1764 possibly in Durham. Henry married Catherine b C1778 in Yorkshire around 1801 in Yorkshire.
There is a record for Christopher Fairfoot Porritt's marriage to Dorothy Crawford in Alwinton Northumberland in 1838. Her parents are Ralph Crawford b 1789 and Margaret Shiell b.1796. I know they had at least 2 children, Catherine b. 1840 in Durham and Henry ( possibly Christopher Fairfoot Henry Porritt ) b 1842 in Northumberland.
I can find no census records for Christopher Fairfoot b 1814. Wife Dorothy is in the 1851 C spelt as "purritt" with the two children. She is listed as head, married and farmers wife. Again in the 1861 C she is listed along with son Henry as head, agricultural labourers wife but again no sign of her husband Christopher.
I can't find any record for Dorothy Porritt after this date or where her husband is.
There is possibly another Christopher Fairfoot Porritt - or the same one married to a
Grace Ann Denham in 1874 at Newcastle upon Tyne. They went in to have lots of children.
Any help in finding out what happened to Dorothy Porritt nee Crawford and where CF Porritt was during every census would be much appreciated. Thanks

:-) :-) :-)
