No one has to be a paying member to have a tree on here.....I know of three that have never paid, My ex,.my father and my daughter.

I have sent all three messages to see if I would get a reply.....only the ex replied....the other two probably changed email address's or ignored everything from Genes thinking it was another "Was Elizabeth Smith a Victorian bride" message

Sorry if this is a bit gloomy, but the reason someone isn't replying may be that they're dead. If someone dies their next of kin isn't necessarily going to know what sites the deceased was a member of, or they mightn't know the passwords to access the accounts. When the subscription isn't renewed the Genes Reunited account reverts to free membership - the tree stays on the site and other members unknowingly send messages. There's possibly huge numbers of accounts with a similar status.

Thanks Kath I will give him the benifit of the doubt that he must have changed his e-mail address. The last time I heared anything about him was from another cousin who said he had emigrated to Canada, as did his sister.

As Jacqueline has already said, trees stay on here even if the owners are no longer members.

If you send someone a private message if they still have the same email address that they registered with Genes then they will be informed that they have a message from you waiting (even if they are no longer members). However people can and often do change their email address and if that is the case then you will not be able to contact them.

If your messages have been opened then they just haven't replied because they CAN reply even if they are no longer members.

I always send a personal mesage. the one in particular I keep trying to get a reply from, I am sure is my late father's nephew, but as of today never opened the messages I have sent him.

There are hundreds,if not thousands, of trees on here whose owners are no longer members.

Trees remain on here for ever if not deleted by the owners.

When you try to make contact, do you compose a personal message..........or use GR's awful standard templates?

Hi Kath
Do you know if the people on here, who have not renewed their membership, still keep the details of the people they are looking for on here. Only I have found a couple of names over the past couple of years (which I am sure are the people I need to get in touch with) who never reply. I have kept trying every few months but nothing they have not even opened the message.

Regards
Carol

This has always been a problem Carol - you can't force people to have good manners.

Sometimes you will get a reply many months after your message has been read. Perhaps the person needs to check information before replying.

You just have to keep hoping that you will get a reply at some point.

I do find it a bit annoying when you try and get in touch with someone, they read what you have put and then do not reply to you. It costs nothing to acknowledge a request even if it is the not the person you are looking for.
