Thanks to all who have offered hep. It was indeed Thomas Murray who married Rose Hamel in Salford in 1899. They were married 10 September 1899 at St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Great Cheetham Street, Salford. The address for Thomas was 32 Mason Street, which is the address at which they were living in 1901, and the address where my father (Thomas Murray) was born. One of the witnesses was E Hamill-presumably Rose's brother Edward. There respective parents were Thomas Murray (predictable), and Patrick Hamell, both of whom were farmers.

This certainly provides me with something work work on. :-D

Thomas Report 12 Apr 2015 17:28

I am interested in the Murray and Hamil families of Ireland and Manchester.

Thomas Murray was born in county Louth, c1875. I am sure he had siblings, but I have no details. Rose Hamill was born in County Monaghan, C1877. She had at least two siblings, Edward Hamill b 1874, and Peter, b 1882. Thomas married rose, somewhere around 1900, but I do not know whether that was in Ireland or in the England.

They all appear on the 1901 census in Manchester, living in Mason Street, St Pauls, and Manchester. Thomas is the head of the family, rose, his wife, and Edward, and Peter are listed as boarders. Thomas and Edward are recorded as being a labourer, peter, as an assistant fishmonger.

There are four other boarders: Owen colleen b 1873, Patrick Grace, James McNeavey, b 1878, and Bernard Rooney, b 1878. They were all born in Ireland, were all labourers (in the case of Patrick, a gas labourer.)

Rose was probably pregnant at that time, because she gave birth to Catherine Murray in 1902.

In 1911, Thomas and Rose are living at 8 Gratton Street, Rochdale road, Manchester, and have two more children, Thomas, b 1906, at Mason Street, and Lilly, b 1911. None of the boarders of 1901 are living with them, and I have been unable to find any details of Edward and Peter Hamill on any English census.

According to the record, Thomas and Rose had had two previous children who died in infancy.

In 1914, living at132 Slater Street, St George, Manchester, Thomas and Rose had a further daughter, Catherine.

I know the family remained in Manchester. Thomas junior, married Nora Winifred Brookes, in Manchester in 1931, had four children, one of who died in infancy, and remained in the Manchester area for the rest of their lives.
