Looking for previous residents of the Flying Rats,Broadway, Great Dunmow, Essex.
Listed as a 17c building, think the Bush family resided there early 1900's,any earlier census info?

There are lots of people named Bush living Broadway, Great Dunmow in previous census years but I can't see any mention of "Flying Rats".

Thanks the listed buildings site suggests the name Flying Rats came into use early 1900's, wondered what it was before it became a pub? earliest resident I can find is Herbert Bush 1906.

There is also a Sarah Bush in the 1841 census aged 50 a publican at The Harp in that area. I wonder if the pub had its name changed later.

In that reference that Jax gave you, there is a note at the end that says

Note: Premises only named in 1937

Extracts taken from Kelly's Directory shows the first occupant as Herbert Bush in 1906, and the last entry in Kelly's as John R. W. Rolfe, 1937

so it looks like a relatively recent naming

is there an airfield nearby????

"Flying Rats" sounds rather like pilots or airplaney

but then there is this reference to it as a Listed Building under English heritage .........

GREAT DUNMOW BROADWAY (South side)
3/57 Flying Rats

GV II

Cottage, formerly a Public House. C17 or earlier. Timber framed and plastered,
with thatched roof. 1 storey and attics. Small lean-to at right with thatched
roof. Single storey extension to left with half hipped thatched roof. 1,3,1

I do note that other references have it for sale for something under £600,000 :-)

My late father used to refer to Squirrels as 'flying rats'.

I couldn't possibly tell you what he called Seagulls!

Thanks everyone for your replies, the name is certainly unusual, thats what got my interest. it's so difficult to trace a building in the earlier census returns. I know the building was there long before the first census but finding it is a nightmare. I will look at all your suggestions. Thanks
