I am trying to complete my Mother’s side of the family tree. My Great Grandmother Rose Pretoria was born in Croydon in 1900. Her parents were Alice and Ernest Cole. Rose had two sisters Edith (died 1983) and Blanch.

Rose married my Great Grandfather George Albert Stevenson, originally from Fullham, London and ended up in Portsmouth Hampshire where she had 15 Children, including my Grandmother Rita Matilda Stevenson in 1929. Rose and George lived in Bransbury Road, Southsea and Widley Road Stamshaw for a time. Rose died in November 1993.

Not much is known about Great Grandad George accept that he was in the army and served in the trenches aged 15-16 during the First World War. He had sisters called Galley and Gladys Stevenson.

So Blanch was actually a Hall.

We do not know why Blanche was a Hall as we knew nothing about Albert, Ernest Hall. Intriguing. Thank you for helping us.

If you're saying you don't understand why Blanch was a Hall - it's clear from the 1891 census posted by alviegal that Alice had been married before, and that Albert, Blanch, and Ernest were her children from her first marriage.

Thank you so much for your help. We knew nothing of a first marriage, we were just told Nan Rose had 2 sisters, Edith and Blanche all called 'Cole'. Is there any record of what happened to Alice Hall's first husband ??

Sorry Jason I should have explained that. I've been trying to find who Alice was married to and what her maiden name was.

The only children born to Ernest and Alice that we know about at this point are Edith, Rose and Hector. Another 5 have apparantly died.

From the place names and DOB, I would guess that this is Blanch's birth and marriage. The certificate for either of them would tell you her father's name.

[EDIT: Or maybe not - there is a Blanche Gertrude Hall in later censuses, born about that time in Middlesex. Not sure.]

Assuming Alice's first husband died, and assuming all her children were also his, it would have been between 1889, when Ernest Hall was conceived, and 1892, when she married Ernest Cole.

And presumably in Croydon.

But if it's true that she was still married on 5th April 1891 (per census), I can't see the death of a likely Hall in Croydon between then and her re-marriage - a small window.

Perhaps they divorced.
Or perhaps she put "married" instead of "widowed", in which case there are several possibilities for her first husband's death 1889 -1892.
