Suppose I found a birth in the GRO index, like:

Births Mar 1855 (>99%)
Addy George Henry Wakefield 9c 8

Then, for Wakefield RD, it's definitely worth checking the local index at
http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/

Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1854
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
ADDY George Henry Sandal Wakefield SMITH SAN/8/63

For those parts of the old Wakefield RD that weren't redistricted to Leeds or Huddersfield, YorksBMD gives the mum's maiden surname pre-1912.
This example also illustrates that YorksBMD indexes by year of birth, not quarter of registration. Goerge must have been a latish Dec birth that didn't get rego'ed until after the new year.

well i see on "search" that there are 4 Addys born in Wakefield who are probably still alive, it might be worth contacting them if you have not already done so?

I have some old family history information which has led me to Oliver Addy who lived in Wakefield in the 1500s and his descendants, two brothers John & Robert Addy who went to Ireland with Cromwells Army of Invasion (1649 - 1653). Apparantly, they and their descendants intermarried with the Irish of the Northern Counties.

Does this information mean anything to anyone?
