I am looking for information regarding the above two people. Mary Martin was born in Stroud, Glos in 1854 and she married an Arthur Taylor. They had a daughter called Maud. I have heard rumours in the family that Arthur was deported to Australia, but I have no evidence to back these rumours up. They are all listed in the 1881 census for Birmingham, but I can't find a record for 1891, and the surname Martin is very very common in records. If anyone thinks they can help, I would love to hear from you. Mary's mother was called Elizabeth Evans and her father was called Henry Martin. Thank you. Regards, Jayne :-D

Transportation to Australia ended in 1868; if he was born in Stroud, England, then he won't have been deported. Emigration might be a possibility if the family rumours have any foundation, but Gins'/safc's 1911 census looks very promising.

There's an article in the Oxford Journal - Saturday 20 July 1872 re a respectable young man called Arthur Taylor, a plasterer from Stroud, accused of stealing a shawl at Nuneham. No age is given. The cased was dismissed through lack of evidence.

Just found out that it probably isn't the same Arthur Taylor as the one in the Oxford Journal article, as apparently it says Strond not Stroud and it happened in Middlesex which is a long way from Gloucestershire in those days. But thank you anyway, it is still fascinating reading!! :-D

There is no such place as Strond - it's a misprint
Nuneham Park, where the alleged offence occurred, is in Oxfordshire........
Middlesex was the home of Mr Daniel Hamilton, whose wife's shawl was the subject of the court case
