Looked at the birth for you. Mary Ann Lindsay was born 23 April 1873 at REDFORD, Dysart. She was illegitimate and her mother Elizabeth Lindsay, a Domestic Servant registered the birth.. |

Yes Susan. That's what we were saying. There is no birth registered for a Mary Ann Hannah only that birth posted for Mary Ann Lindsay. If you get that birth registration , it may give an occupation for her mother and an address. |

the only information on her wedding certifcate was that her father was William Lindsay and he was a burgh surveyor but I think that this could possibly have been her uncle as I have now discovered that on the scotland census 1881 a Mary Ann Hannah is shown aged 7 as William Lindsays niece |

Looking good Mary! I do think that the Mary Ann Hannah on the 1881 census is the same Person as Mary Ann Lindsay. The only way to see the actual image of that census is to use credits on Scotlandspeople. Hannah may have been her father's surname and she may have chaged her name to Lindsay if she had no contact with her father and was raised by her uncle and aunt and their children. |

Perhaps the daughter Elizabeth O.Lindsay on the 1891 census was Mary's mother and on Mary's marriage certificate she named her grandfather as her father - which did sometimes happen with illegitimate children especially if they were brought up with the grandfather. |
