Please can someone see if they can find this man on the 1891 census. That is if it took place before he died. He was born in Alverstoke Gosport ,

This man is not related to me. Its just that for a photo comp I have to take a picture of a tombstone and I have picked his. He was buried in Anns Hill Cemetry and it says he drowned off the coast of Cape Horn. It also said he was a RNR.

His parents were George and Sarah Ann Tribe who are buried with him. I have found a bit of information about the parents but cant find anything out about him.

The tomb is a big tomb so I guess he came from a relatively well off family. I was just interested to find out more about him.

His Dad George was a dairyman, then he became a Licensed Victualler. He worked at The Royal Arms in Stoke Road. He also was a MP at one time.

I have tried Google and found a picture of his grave and that was about it.

Thanks for your help

Thank you safc and Margee for all your help. That is my man.

Is there anyway I can find out which ship he was on?
Can you get service records for the merchant Navy like you can with the Royal Navy?

Seems like they'd lost crewmen off the ship before, eg in Feb of the same year:

Daily Alta California, Volume 84, Number 50, 19 February 1891

The Cairnsmore Loses Several Men.

A despatch from Queenstown to the Merchants' Exchange states that the British ship Cairnsmore arrived there yesterday, and reports having experienced etorms off Cape Horn. Two seamen were washed overboard and drowned, and three others badly injured. The Cairnsmore is commanded by Captain Curswell, and sailed from Tacoma on October 6th last.

Thank you so much Kucinta. I didn't have any of that information. Very interesting.

Its amazing what you can find out about a complete stranger.

The grave looks big and important compared to others in the cemetery. I just had to look into the family.

Thank you so much for all your help

I would doubt that his body would actually be buried in the cemetery. I suspect he would have been washed overboard in the rough seas of the Cape and his body never recovered. Even if it had been recovered they wouldn't have been able to keep the body for the long trip home, probably buried at sea.

True Margee

I hadn't thought about that. Yes you are probably right. Its a nice thought though having the family buried together even if its not physically possible.
