I have a 1769 Baptism entry for "Thomas Hill bastard son of Elizabeth Earle"
Does this mean that the father's surname could have been Hill?

It could also just be the child's second Christian name.

What name did he use when he married? Assuming that he did so..............

You must have worked back to him somehow...........

But it could be a clue.............

He was married using the name Thomas Hill.
I am interested in him because my Hill family was the only one in the same village.

I would say that probably Mr. Hill had owned up to being the father.
Where is this from?

You might find a Bastardy Order.
They appear to be held at Warwickshire County Record Office.
