Anne Report 23 Feb 2015 13:28

Just found this site. Am interested in finding the relationships between the above surnames all resident in Clifford cum Boston during the 19th/20th century Lomax is known as a christian name but I suspect it might have been a surname once. Marie Sunderland daughter of Louisa Emma nee Harrison (and my late mother's cousin) spent her life in Skipton Yorkshire.
Any help would be appreciated. I already know of James Diggle whose sister married my g grandfather Alfred Edridge Pike.
Thank you,
Anne Hall

Welcome to the boards Anne,

as you have inadvertently posted twice perhaps you could delete the other thread just so info is not duplicated :-)

If you are looking just for marriages between these surnames it's easy to use freebmd.org.uk , if you are looking for specific people you can also search trees ("Search" at top of page) and then make contact with the tree owner, or post a query here and someone will help.

Mom's cousin Marie in 1911. The Walter Sunderland is actually Walter Pike, a visitor. Last name is Mary Catherine Smith, a servant. Wonder who did the transcription, it's very easy to read. Parents married 22 years, 3 children born, only 2 still living but 3 children are listed, the eldest being 26 so from a previous marriage?

Another mistranscription. The head is John Sunderland aged 32. The children must be his from a previous marriage, he and Louisa have only been married 3 years.

I am already aware of, and have, all the relevant census's etc.On the 1911 census I have I noted Walter Pike and have all the relevant details for him, his ancestors and descendants. I am still looking for a connection between a Lomax Harrison, brother to Marie Sunderland, and the Pikes or Diggle. Lomax is a name which has been passed down as a Christian through the Diggle and Pike family. One of my g.g Uncles used Geoffrey Lomax as his stage name, he was "left for dead" in the early 20th century in Johannesburg where I still have many relatives. Thank you for your help anyway.

When asking for help, it saves a lot of wasted effort if you say precisely what you want, and also - especially - what you don't need

How could Lomax Harrison be Marie Sunderland's brother?

That's what I was pondering, Jacqueline.

Anne, perhaps you should have explained in your opening post exactly what you were looking for.

I'm still confused by the statement that Lomax Harrison was a brother to Marie Sunderland. Did you mean Mary Ann Harrison who married James Edwin Sunderland?

Curiously Louisa Emma Harrison married John Sunderland the same year and he was the father of Marie born 1880.

.OK sorry about the confusion - I have been doing genealogy for some years but under stress at the moment. . Have just discovered these letters, written to my mother Helen Mary Davies nee Pike 1940, by Marie Sunderland (very shaky handwriting she died later that year). Now I look again she says (amongst many other things!) "Uncle Lomax" her "mothers brother" came from Blackpool with his daughter Dora to visit. I had already found that Marie's father was married before and had a son James T b 1885 by his first wife Isabella Rogerson Sunderland who died in 1887. He remarried Louisa Emma Harrison they had Marie b 1891 and her brother Carl b 1894 1901 census. So sorry chaps! am retiring to bed with a wet towel round my head - will check my facts again tomorrow! It was the connection to Clifford that interested me.

Anne Report 15 Jul 2015 19:36

I am back at last to my research. I now have a copy of Marie Sunderland's (1891-194) will where she lists 17 cousins! William Lomax , Dora Marion, Marjorie all Harrisons, Frances Alice Brown nee Sunderland, Harry Heaton & Fred Sunderland, Ethel Hargreaves nee Sunderland, Hilda Marcia Holt nee Sunderland, Nelly Foulds, Gertude Blakey, Edith Hargreaves, Alice Dewhurst,Susan Whitley, Polly Astin, Annie Taylor, George Clifford Carlisle. I found all the Sunderlands on the 1891 census children of Jas (Joseph) Pickles & Nancy Sunderland. They were in Great Little Marsden Burnley. I still have to check the other married ladies. Thomas (prop of the Albion Pub)& his son Thomas Lomax Harrison was on the 1881 Clifford census - Thomas Lomax is also on the 1911 census at Burnley . Clifford is a very small village pop 663 in 1881. You can see why I am looking for a connection to my mother Helen nee
PIke, who said Marie was her cousin. Marie was certainly my brother John Manod Davies,s godmother, he was a legatee in her will. all these people plus the Diggles and Pikes must have comprised most of the population of Clifford!
