Twin boys Carlisle look up c1907

Hi

Apologies as there isn't much to go on.

A cousin of my mum's has just told his daughters that he had twin half brothers. This is all the info we have on them

The cousins father and twins father was William H Bousfield born 1898 in Carlisle. We think the twins were born and grew up in Boustead's Grassing area of Carlisle and were born when William was about 19. He wasn't allowed to marry her (wrong side of tracks suspect) but must have kept in touch. Gerald, cousin, can remember his dad getting a black edged letter during the war and went into the yard to read it. Gerald remembers him crying which was unusual. Dont know if this was death of one of them or the mother. However, when William died in 1964, Gerald remembers two men smartly dressed at funeral ( thought they were to do with masonics) and heard them talking and saying "should we tell him?" They didn't and Gerald thinks it may have been them.

Suspect the only way to discover them is to trawl through births. Have looked via ancestry and there are 1550 so need to see residence to narrow down - even if looking for two boys born on same day.

I have all the registered and other family info on William, marriage and other children but as Gerald is now 89 and his younger sister are not in good health it would be good if we could find more info.

Thanks in advance.

Am I correct in thinking that the twins birth was registered under their mother's name?

Have you no idea at all of her name?

Could you confirm dates please. If he was born 1898 he would be 19 in 1917, not 1907

Apologies, William was born in 1887 - issues with tablet keyboard.

Also no ideas of mother's name. Have already checked under Bousfield so assume registered to her name.

OK, so my birth couldn't be possible then. :-(
That makes things a lot more complicated as mmn doesn't show untill after 1911.

Just following up on Andy's posts, possibly the Reay boys were children of a marriage the previous year ( or before as there are several possibles Reay marriages with name William like the son)

The Martindales look possible , several marriages for the female name after the boy's birth if she married.

Andrew

Andrew Report 22 Feb 2015 19:37

Albert Victor Martindale died in 1907, so can rule them out.

Its going to be a long slog through FreeBMD and 1911 census.

The Reays look interesting due to Christian names. William, obviously, but my grandfather's name (William's brother) was Sydney.

Was going to try any and cross ref with the 1911 census to see if any live on Boustead's Grassing.

I appreciate this help. I'm not near a PC and tablet and phones aren't a good replacement for a 24" monitor and keyboard! :-)

I can't find the Briggs brothers in the 1911 census even when doing a wildcard on surname.

Will keep trying. Thanks

Andrew

Andrew Report 22 Feb 2015 21:56

One of the Briggs (Alexander Ross) dies 1909.

As far as I can see the Nicolson births aren't twins. Both are on the 1911 census with different families.

Can't find Nicholson's on 1911 census. I'm fairly positive they wouldn't move from Carlisle. Have also tried checking without surnames but no success.

The mother could have married by 1911, and the twins taken the stepfather's surname

I appreciate this.

I think it maybe an unsolvable mystery given the lack of info.
