What was the occupation of the father - on the cert?

What was the occupation of the man on the census return?

Yes, the spelling is likely to vary...........quite considerably, in some instances.

Hi

I bought my grandfather’s birth cert, and then I bought his parents’ marriage cert.
The marriage was between James Branigan and Elizabeth Gaughran, 1906 Louth, Ireland.

On the wedding cert it has James down as Branigan but his father is down as Brangan, now i know you have different speelings but this is on the same cert, could this just be a mistake.

But what I am really trying to find out is James parents,
from the marriage record it says his father is John Brangan.
Where it say where living as time of marriage it has down newtown monasterboice, so I have looked this up and have found a john Brannigan, but I am not sure if this is James father,
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Louth/Monasterboice/Newtown_Monasterboice/572500/

I can’t find James on the 1901 census, I have found a record with a james Branagan born in newtown monasterboice,
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGPS-H9K

but on the marriage record it say where living at time of marriage which is newtown monasterboice, but this doesn’t prove he was born there.

There are a few different spellings with these records when it comes to Branigan, could the spelling really change that many times over the years.
I have found a John Brannigan on the 1911 census living in newtown monasterboice, but not sure if this would be James father. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Louth/Monasterboice/Newtown_Monasterboice/572500/

Could someone advise me on what to do next because I am at a loss, I’m not sure what record to get next, I can’t go to the 1891 census as there isn’t one for Ireland.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all so much
Lorna
