Find Ancestors

I am stuck in finding out further information about my great grandfather, William John Farguson. He was born in 1875 in Glamorganshire, worked as a shop assistant, married Effie Jane Jeffrey in December 1910 in Cardiff. In 1911 he was living in 1911 Corporation Road.

I would like to find out who his parents were. My grandmother told me that the family changed the name at some point, so I have tried searching for Farqharson and Ferguson but can't find anything. Any ideas?

Thanks Tenerife Sun - Will look into the birth record - the marriage record is definitely the second one - I have loads of information about Effie Jane and her family, but very little on William John.

Wish I could work out what I do wrong on these searches - I have tried for hours & spent loads on credits only to end up looking at people who have no relevance to my family!

Here's the 1851 as Ferguson. I have found all the children's baptisms, as Farguson, and several references to Henry Albert born London c1839 as a fireman, on ships where he joined at Cardiff.There was another daughter born 1851

Thank you all very much for all your help. I think it will take a while to sort through all this information (I'm not very good with numbers, so family history is really challenging with all those dates!), but I have already been able to fill in some blanks and confirm some family tales that have been handed down.

I have been searching the GR records without much success but have just found out I can have free access to Find my past at the library, so will try that in future. Very pleased to see they have Merchant Navy records as the Morgans were merchant navy going back several generations, so hopefully should be able to find something helpful there!
