This lady has led me a merry dance for many many years! She was born 1817 in Gloucestershire,probably Bisley,she sent many letters home to my dearest sister,Elizabeth wife of Jehu Gardiner ,living scrubs Bisley. They range from 1830s till1860s. I cannot however connect her to Elizabeth,Rhoda says her parents are Sarah baker and William bishop.letters start in New York and move around ended her days in Cambridge port mass. Says she arrived USA in 1825. Any help really appreciated, Pam herron

Is Blackman her maiden name or married name - as you say her Father is William Bishop.

How do you know she was born in 1817?

Who did she arrive in the USA with as she would only have been c 8 years old?

Elizabeth was older ... was she perhaps previously married?

The only reference to a Jehu Gardiner (note Gardner) I can find at the moment. Lots of Elizabeth's in previous census' but all seem to be widowed or single. If the correct Jehu, then he appears to have a daughter Mary Ann born c 1836

If Pam can tell us Elizabeth's surname before marriage ?

in 1841 Ancestry has hived the household members off from one another as it is wont to do

I suspect this is a brother of Jehu in 1841 ... occupation is baker as is Jehu's in 1861, and the biblical names match up

the Gardner baptisms in Bisley at familysearch all seem to be Quaker (France Meeting)

no Jehu baptisms of any sort in Bisley

I'm wondering whether Jehu partnered with Elizabeth and took on the surname of her and her children ... not unknown to happen ...

Rhoda says on a census that she arrived in 1825,can find no records for this,dont know who she travelled with,she is in new york in 1833 with a young baby edward no mention of charles blackman who she married.i suspect she married in america. her sister as she addresses her is Elizabeth Bishop,she died in1866663 age 68. i dont think she was married before,the marriage cert says spinster.Jehu is the son of Isaac Gardner and Ann Driver,Jehu born 29 9 1811. Elizabeth Bishop born 1795 no father given. I come down through Mary Ann daughter of Jehu born 1835 Thank you to you all

Rhoda's info is from her death record ... where is the others' from?


certainly knowing the crucial bit of info, that Elizabeth Gardiner was born Bishop, suggests where the connection lies!


if Elizabeth Gardiner was the daughter of a Ms Bishop, quite possibly her mother was the sister of Rhoda's father?

Rhoda's parents could even have taken Elizabeth into their family

Rhoda was 20 years younger than Elizabeth though

Thank you Joonie and everyone, this is all correct as far as I know, it's the Bishops that are confusing,just to confuse more on one of her,Rhoda, letters she says address me as Blackman,they don't know me as Franklin here,in America. It's possible she was married to a Franklin first,although her first born was known as Edward Blackman.He died age 17 . Big thank you pam
