Thank you so much. This has really given me something to go on now - especially the marriage. You are all clearly much more thorough than I ! Thanks again. |

Wow, that is amazing! Thank you so much! That has really given me something to go on now. Since your last reply, I browsed the Infirmary that indeed was attached to the Workhouse (and in fact still forms part of the offices for what is now the Norwich Community Hospital) and apparently our local Records Office has details of the hospital admissions, so I will take a trip there this week. Many thanks to you all for your help. |

Could be a red herring of course but this Harriett has the middle name of Matilda and 1877 is very likely the birth year if she was 18 in January 1896 |

Many thanks for your help Catherine and Greyghost. I have no idea where Harriet was born unfortunately. The only information I have is that she was 18 at the time of Ada's birth - and sorry, the year of Ada's birth was a typo - it is 19.01.1896. That puts Harriet's birth around 1878 but that is all I have. I'm a bit silly spending such a long time on somebody who wasn't actually a blood relative, but I've just got the bug! |

My great grandmother gave birth to my grandfather in the Mint Street workhouse in Southwark. She lived just round the corner in Lant Street at the time but she was still entered into the admission and discharge register and the birth was also recorded in the workhouse birth register as well as the GRO register. She was in the workhouse for about 3 weeks - which was probably a normal confinement in those days (1870). |

Workhouses usually had hospitals attached, which was often the only place the poor could get treatment. Maybe you should look in the Infirmary Admission and discharge registers if they are available. as opposed to the Workhouse itself. |

When and where was Harriet born? |

Thank you Catherine. Yes I do have these, and they have always bugged me because of the variety of names. I often wondered (hopefully) that they were a kind family who took in orphaned/illegitimate children! Thank you. |

You probably have Ada but just in case, these are some possible census records:- |

Workhouses sometimes also ran a hospital which was used by all in the area. Harriet may have just gone there to give birth. |

Hi, I am researching my great-aunt, Ada Matilda Smith. She was born in the Norwich Workhouse (19.01.1898) and I have a copy of her birth record. Her mother's name was Harriet Smith and Ada was illegitimate. However, I cannot find a record of Harriet's name on the Workhouse admissions/discharges register and haven't been able to trace anything about Harriet, despite putting in the widest options. Am I correct in assuming that everyone would have been registered as an admission? Thank you. |
