Agree with DET on WW1 deaths

My g/g/uncle, whose body was never found. Was seen by his batman on one day, but then someone thought they saw him again the following day, during battle. So his death date, even in the war diaries is ambiguous, So they have listed his death date as the date his batman last saw him.

I agree with you Jude.

Its also a potential finding tool for deaths post 2006 where the gro index hasn't been published on line. OK, as the normal residence isn't mentioned it can take a leap of faith. If it's especially important to confirm that the entry refers to the correct person, researchers can purchase the Will/Grant.

Eringobragh - in my opinion the dates of deaths on the battle front could reflect the confusion at the time. The entry on the CWGC site and the Probate calendar for one of mine differs from his medical records.

I am not suggesting you buy the wills mind (unless you really want to)!

For example I had a death and all I knew was the quarter and year from the BMD. But putting the surname and year in brings up all those from that year. The pre-1996 takes a bit of manual searching but 1996 to present is sortable

I cannot comment on other than "Soldiers Will"s .
My uncles date of death was incorrect (I have his documents) and the " Will" was a photocopy of the standard page from his Army Book stating his next of kin and their address.

Just to say that the new on-line "find a will"

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Is a wonderful tool for finding actual dates of death where only the year is known :-)
