East of Britain as opposed to West Indies

Hi there - my ancestor was born in Kurrachee, East India in the early 1850s. I presume that this is modern day Kurachi. But this is on what was the WESTERN cost of India. Why would it be called EAST India? Is that a point made to the East India Company?

Best wishes,

Peter
