Many thanks to all!

Rachel had a much more interesting life than I'd thought - and I would probably never have known without you.

Ancestry has a copy of the original petition (vol 58 147), but same info as on index card above.

New York, Naturalization Petitions, 1794-1906

In the matter of the aplication of Andrew Nichols to become a citizen of the united states....

John Ridgeway signs to say he's acquainted with applicant and that applicant has resided in the United States for at least 5 years- and at least 1 year proceding application in New York.

U.S. Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992 (Indexed in World Archives Project)
Name: Andrew Nichols
Birth Place: United Kingdom
Court District: New York
Date of Action: 27 Oct 1875

Very little info on the above, it's volume 58 record 147 - not sure if the full records are in the unindexed images on FamilySearch?

Again, many thanks to everyone.
There's a lot there to think about.

It certainly does look as if they went to the US - too many coincidences otherwise

Gritty - re Ireland on records, I've found that often Ireland and Scotland seem to be interchangeable, especially on US records - perhaps the clerks couldn't tell the difference in accent, and didn't actually ask the person where they were born.

MC - I'll look into Bucks workhouses - although from this link, it doesn't look as if relevant records have survived:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Buckingham/

and also how many of "my" Andrew's children were still living in 1886.

As Rachel's still in Akeley in 1871, maybe Andrew had gone to the USA with Henry?? and maybe others of his children c.1865-6 - if the info on that workhouse record posted by MC is correct.
If he hadn't been at home with Rachel for 5 or 6 years, maybe the 1871 enumerator just assumed she was widowed??

Can't see travel records for Andrew, Rachel or Henry.

In case it's of relevance, this is further detail from the 1886 admission to the Almshouse:

Andrew Nichols had been in the USA (in NY state) for 20 years and was naturalised.

He was a labourer, as was his father.

He had 2 living children (self supporting).

Reason for admission was "old age and infirmity" and it was stated that he would remain dependent.

In answer to the question if he'd ever been in a poorhouse before it states "Poor House in England 20 years ago, 2 weeks"

So that intimates that he would have been in a workhouse in England very soon before departing for US.

Would Bucks workhouse records be available?

Just in case it's relevant

New York Death Index:

1892 State census has an Andrew in a 'Home for the Aged'- it states born Ireland, but these are just 'ditto' marks and everyone on the list appears to be born Ireland?

Name: Andrew Nicholis

Election District: 38

Henry's marriage:

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jan 2015 23:01

Well, if those grandchildren are Henry's children, maybe this is Henry going to US:

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Henry Nichols
Name: Henry Nichols
Arrival Date: 27 Oct 1871
Birth Date: abt 1848
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: English
Place of Origin: England
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: France

ADDED: Or maybe not. There's a tree on Ancestry which says he emigrated in 1865.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jan 2015 23:00

Thanks for all that, everyone - I think!
I did see that poorhouse record for Andrew in 1886, and wondered about it, Gins.

So why is Rachel in Akeley listed as a widow in 1871?
And in Brooklyn in 1884, if that's the same Rachel?

If she's not a widow in 1871, where's Andrew?

Re the death in 1865, I admit I would have expected Andrew's death to be in Buckingham reg district, which includes Akeley.
