Can someone offer some help please.
I want to order the marriage certificates for Robert Davison, born c1815 in Northshields Northumberland who married Jane Smith in April 1836 and quite possibly also married Catherine Potts in 1858. I have the details from the GR site but they do not give the reference numbers required by the G.R.O. Do marriage certificates exist for these dates or can I order them using different criteria. These certificates will I hope give me the parents names, addresses and maybe occupations.
Hope to hear from someone.

Official registration didnt start till Sept qtr 1837 so there are no marriage certs before then

The best you can hope for is the parish record of the 1836 one these usually dont give fathers names but sometimes the witnesses are family so this may help .

The 1858 one will give marital status at the time of marriage and fathers names .if known

Does the record for the 1836 marriage give the Parish? There are images of lots of parish records for Northumberland ( and Durham) on familysearch but they are transcribed, you need to page through the images.

I think the images for St Hilda's on Family search start from 1866

Gritty, there are images for St Hilda's before 1866 - they are just under South Shields and that seem to have images of other churches as well. I had a bit of trouble finding Robert and Jane's as the pages are out of order. This is the link to the image:

There is a tree on Ancestry for Robert Davison but his wife's name is given as Jane Gott Smith and there is only one child shown - Harriet Owens Davison, b1848.

Need to be careful with this as there is another tree for a Robert Davison married to a Catherine Potts in 1839 - tree gives details of parish record.

The link to Family Search gives effectively a copy of a sort of marriage certificate. Robert's wife was Jane Gott Smith and the child, Harriet is correct. I am quite certain that Robert married a Catherine Potts but in 1858 not 1839.
