alviegal Report 18 Dec 2014 22:04

The case in 1897 was described in the papers as 'A JUVENILE JACK SHEPPARD.'

A curious case of burglary was heard before Uxbridge magistrates when 14 year old Sidney Thomas Batten of Uxbridge was charged with entering a school house. He was captured inside the house, redhanded, with property worth £5. He was covered in soot as he had attempted to escape up the chimney. Proceeds from other burgalaries were also found on him.

Western Gazette 30 April 1897, Yeovil, Somerset, England

More facts in another paper say that he was employed by a stationer in Uxbridge and was in the habit of leaving daily papers at the house. One day he decided to steal the front door key. He also stole from the Parish Church Schools and a milkman's home.

Illustrated Police News 08 May 1897 London, London, England

---------

Sidney Thomas Batten (16), who pleaded guilty at the Middlesex Sessions to burglary, said that he'd been led away by reading penny books.
