Last name: Patillo

This ancient Scottish name is locational in origin, deriving from either of two places named Pittilloch, one near Freuchie in Fife and the other in Glenfarg, Perthshire. Both places are named with the ancient Pictish (pre 5th Century) element "peit", portion of land, with the Gaelic term "tulach", hill. The surname is well recorded in Scotland from the 13th Century on, most early forms remaining close to the placename; the Ade de Petillok recorded below appears as an assizer at Perth in 1305 as Adam de Pethilloch. One Robert Pittilloch, a Dundee man, raised recruits for the French service in the neighbourhood of Dundee in 1423 - 1424. He accompanied them to France, and was made a commander in the French service, later being created lord of Sauveterre, and known as "le petit roi de Gascoyne". As Robert Petillo he was one of King James 11 of Scotland's ambassadors. The modern surname can be found as Pat(t)ullo and Pat(t)illo. The marriage of John Pattullo and Janet Halket was recorded in Edinburgh on June 13th 1773. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ade de Petillok, which was dated 1295, Register of the Monastery of Cambuskenneth, during the reign of John Balliol, King of Scotland, 1292 - 1296. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

History of the Pattillo Family (excerp from M.J. Miller)

I recently inherited some family paperwork which included a 27 page packet of history of the Pattillo family. I'm not sure if this information can help anyone, but I have a family tree hand written on very old paper, along with other papers that were typed tracing George and Henry Pattillo on down through the generations. I'm not sure if it's complete, but here is an excerp from the front of the packet (please forgive syntax errors, I copied it as it was originally typed):

History of the Pattillo Family

The Pattillo family is an ancient family, residing at Balumbie, near Dundee, in Scotland. During the reign of Lewis the VI of France, he came over into Scotland and Robert Pattillo, with several other men, joined the King’s “Archer Guards,” and so distinguished himself in an insurrection in Gascony, that the King promoted him, with the appointment of Governor of one of his Provinces. From this circumstance the Pattillo coat of arms was established, which is an unbent bow resting on a shield, the crescent, a mailed glove, with a rose in hand; the motto on which is, “Ft decerpta, D’at odorum.” During the persecution against the Huguenots that broke out on the revocation of the Edict of Nantz, one of the sons (George by name) of Robert Pattillo, escaped from France, and made his way to Dundee, where he found protection among his relatives in Scotland. There he married and reared three sons, William, George, and Henry. The Pattillo name was originally spelled “Pattullock,” which means in Scotch, “The foot of the Lake” – perhaps from the situation of the family residence – but about a hundred and sixty years ago, the greater part of the family changed the spelling to “Pattillo,” to correspond with the French pronunciation.
The above face, we have from a correspondence with Robert and Augustus Pattillo, of Glasgow, Scotland (the supposed grandsons of Wm. Pattillo), who say that “all who bear the name of Pattillo are akin.” We have entire confidence in their correctness. The following facts are from my father, Samuel Pattillo.
“My father, George Pattillo, aged about twenty and his brother, Henry Pattillo, about eighteen years old, came to America in the year 1740. My father had not been in America in a great while, before he was married to Martha Varner, of Pennsylvania. He afterwards settled in Charlotte Co. Virginia, where he reared the most of his family – five sons and three daughters – their names as follows: James, William, David, John, and Samuel – Sarah, Mary and Janet.
“My father’s brother, Henry Pattillo, settled in North Carolina; and in time became an eminent Presbyterian minister. He married, and reared several children. All the Pattillos in America are descendants of those two brothers; the most of them being those from George Pattillo, my father, who was a devout, holy man, a Wesleyan Methodist – my mother of the same faith.”
My father – Samuel Pattillo – was a Methodist preacher more than forty years, before he was called to his reward in 1844. He was twice married: first to Francis Hall – by whom there were nine children. Names – George, Alexander, Leory, Martha Reid, Wesley, Simon, James, Elizabeth, Urban and Fannie. His second wife was Martha Bailey, by whom there were eight children (three died in infancy). Named – Samuel, Henry, Mary Louise, Robert Fletcher, Benjamin, Alpheu and Mattie Janet.

Pattillo Family

Historical researchers, using some of the oldest manuscripts, including Clan genealogies, the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, the Ragman Rolls, the Inquisitio Rolls, the Black Book of Exchequer, Parish cartularies, baptismal records, tax records, and many other manuscripts, found the name Pattillo in Fifeshire where they had been seated from very early times, and are Conjecturally descended from the MacLillichs who claim descendancy from Angus, grandson of Somerled, Lord of the Isles, the original name being Pattilloch or Pattillock.
Spelling variations of the name causes much confusion in research. These variations occurred for a variety of reasons. From time to time the surname was spelled Patilloch, Pattilloch, Patillock, Pattillock, Patillo, Pattillo, Patullo, Pattullo, Petillo, Petillow, Pettillo, Petullow, Petilloch, Pettilloch, Petillock, Pettillock, Pitillo, Pittillo, Pitillow, Pittillow, Pitullow, Pitilloch, Pittilloch, Pitillock or Pittillock. These variations occurred sometimes between father and son. It was not uncommon for a clansman to be born with one spelling, married with another and still another be on his tombstone. Sometimes the different spelling was due to clan or religeous loyalty to a branch or cheiftan.

The surname Pattillo emerged as a Scottish Clan or family in their territory at Fifeshire. In 1305, William Patilloch received a grant of lands from King Robert the Bruce called Gibliston, and at the same time Adam Patilloch held the lands at Freuchie in Fifeshire. These two branches of the clan flourished and most notable the name of Robert Pitilloch of Dundee, recruted his fellow Scots in 1423 for service in France. In 1452 he became a French citizen and was made "Lord of Sauveterre" for his gallant contribution to the French army. He was known as "the little king of Gascoigne". He became the Scottish Ambassador to the Courts of France and Spain. Meanwhile the name in Scotland gradually became Petillo, dropping the last consanants.

The clan acquired lands at Kynnochtry in 1585. Notable amongst the Clan from early times was Robert Pitiloch of Dundee, Scotland. However, typical of the ancient conflict between highlanders and Edinburgh, many ancient highland clans have still not officially been recognized as Clans by Lord Lyon of Scotland.

In North America, the Highlanders settled in Virginia, the Carolinas, Nova Scotia and the Ottawa Valley of Canada. Some of the first imigrants were Henry and George Alexander Pattillo. Henry Pattillo became an emminant Presbyterian Minister of Hanover, Virginia and educator in North Carolina. Most of George's descendants migrated from Virginia to Georgia and then westward to the Pacific shore and beyond to Australia. Many of George's descendants were Methodist Ministers. Andrew and Gerard Patullo arrived in Philadelphia in 1824 and then a Thomas Patillo settled in Philadelphia in 1828.

Yet another tree has Jane Johnson born 1710 but her children born 1712-1725.

Do these people actually read what they have written?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Dec 2014 10:45

Another tree says that the 1690 George Pattillo was the son of George Robert Pattillo (1669-1730) and Catherine Blair Gibson (1640-1673)

Curious that she gave birth after she'd been dead for 17 years!

A tree on Ancestry has his name as George Pattillo, born 1690, Dundee, son of George Pattillo born 1669/70. It ays that this George was the son of Robert Pattillo born 1625, France (possibly near Spanish border) and Catherin Blair born abt. 1640, Scotland.

Keep in mind that Ancestry trees have to be taken with a grain of salt.
