Thanks Dea, that's a good possible. I've never heard of the name Handsley before and on his son, Walter's, marriage certificate it looks like Hambley so I suppose it could be transcribed as Landsley ... definitely Handsley on 1861 and 1881 though. |

Having digested all this info, I'm now looking at Handsley Hornby. He was born in 1847. I can find him in 1861 and 1881 census but can't seem to locate him in 1771. He married Susan in 1873 but can't find hide nor hair of him in 1871. |

Thanks Chris. I've never seen this done before but I guess they did a lot of strange things back then. |

Bit of a 'job lot'!, quite a common thing to do. |

Still wading my way through this great information. Chris, you found a ref to baptisms for some of Handsley & Susan's children and five of them were all baptised on the same day. Any guesses as to why this would be. |

Sorry for being so long getting back ... internet was down all last night. Thanks so much for all this. I did look on freebmd but must've missed it somehow. It's usually my first go-to. It looks like you guys have done another amazing job, I'll have to digest this and maybe send off for some certificates. |

This looks like a death, from free bmd: |

On a quick look there appears to be a Handsley, born about 1843, married to Sophia, and a Handsley, born about 1847, married to Susan, both Lincolnshire. |

I am trying to find the birth of Walter Hornby, born about 1885. He married Maria Crowe in 1912. I've checked the 1891 & 1901 censuses and think I've found him born to parents Handsley & Susan Hornby. |
