Thank you all! It was the military connection I needed most. Yes Chris I have seen Shirley's message and tried to find my way around her tree with some success. Chris what is the 'will bond penal sum' referring to? I am fairly new to all this genealogy stuff but really getting into it - it's exciting. My dad is 98 and I want to tell him about his ancestors too!

How do I find out why my great great grandfather was christened in Serampore, Bengal on 5th April 1807. His name is John Bonner and I have his birthdate as 29th November 1806. His father james Bonner was christened on 6th August 1770 in Coldingham Berwick in the UK and died in Tweedmouth 20th July 1818. he married magdalen Johnston on 7th November 1790 in Plumstead Kent. Were they about to leave for India? Was he a military man perhaps? What other reason might there be? :-S
