The only certain way is to buy the cert.
This is the only Sarah Broomfield on the 1851 census in Sunderland. No way of telling if its the same person.

There's a tree on Ancestry that has the 1831 Sarah and she definitely didn't die in 1854. She married Robert Hedley Brown and was still having children in 1873.

Margee's Sarah Ann above was a widow by 1891. The 1881 and 1891 were both for the same address and Joseph was an Iron Moulder. In 1901 she was a grocer 'on her own account' Eleanor, James and Walter were still living at home. Here is 1891

TS, I was just trying to show that the Sarah born 1831 was not the one who died in 1854.

I have just returned home and was amazed to find all these extra posts since visiting my mam Yes the Sarah Ann Broomfield who married Joseph Drummond (who died in 1884) was my g/g/grandparents. I was trying to find if the Sarah Ann who died in 1854 was any relation to my Sarah but as suggested I would need a death cert for any further info and according to margee above she is not the one born 1831. Thanks again all, sorry for late acknowledgements.

Here's the death in question, from the GRO index Deaths Sep 1854 (>99%) Broomfield Sarah Ann Sunderland 10a 278
I checked the local online index at: http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1399
Here's that hit, plus some other example hits
Surname Forename Year Index Number BROOMFIELD Sarah 1854 M12/469 -------------- AIREY Elizabeth 1854 NB15/304 ANDERSON Eleanor 1858 HE9/74 ANDERSON Eleanor 1858 SB14/253 ANDERSON Elizabeth 1854 ES11/229 ANDERSON Elizabeth 1854 HO7/58 ANDERSON Elizabeth 1858 ES14/208 ANDERSON Elizabeth 1857 ES13/219 ANDERSON Elizabeth 1860 HE9/491 ANDERSON Ellen 1860 ES15/286 ANDERSON Ellen 1858 HE9/128
It's clear to me that the leading letters in the local index ref refer to subdistricts in Sunderland RD and Houghton-le-Spring RD.
Here's those subdistricts used for the census in 1861: SUNDERLAND RD RG9 North Bishop Wearmouth 3765-3770 South Bishop Wearmouth 3771-3776 East Sunderland 3777-3778 West Sunderland 3779-3780 Monk Wearmouth 3781-3784
HOUGHTON LE SPRING RD RG9 Houghton Le Spring 3752-3754 Hetton le Hole 3755-3757
So, Sarah Broomfield died in the Monk Wearmouth subdistrict, if that helps any.

All of Durham is covered by online local indexes, although their coverage is incomplete. None of them have info that's not in the GRO index, beyond the local ref (except S Tyneside gives the exact date of marrs). However, all these marr refs have an entry # as the last item of the ref, so one can tell who wed whom just by clicking on a link - it's the + sign for Sunderland. [NB Sometimes one finds a page # as the last item - this is more common on B/Ds - I haven't checked what offices use what item, but B/D regos have 100 pages & 500 entries] Just like one has to guess the subdistrict code on B/Ds, one has to guess the church code on Ms (except S Tyneside gives a decoder for its Ms: http://www.southtyneside.info/article/10778/Marriage-indexes ) [NB For Durham RD, one has to check the postal application form to see the local ref.]
Re guessing the church code, one usually finds synagogues usually have a J or S in the code; Quakers (or Friends) usually have a Q or F in the code; C of E often have a C in the code, and the registrar usually has an R in his code.
Here's some Durham examples: Births Dec 1845 (>99%) Benson William Durham 24 84
Using http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd as a gateway to online local indexes: Birth certificate for: Name: BENSON, William Year: 1845 Register No. - Entry No. - District SN 12 entry 138 So I guess this subdistrict is St Nicholas in Durham RD - his censuses all show his pob=Coxhoe (or they would if they were transcribed accurately)
Marriage certificate for: Name: ANDERSON, Elizabeth Year: 1875 Other index entries for this marriage: ROSE, Samuel Register No. - Entry No. - District DCCE22/3 entry 470
Now I happen to know DCCE22 is St Helen, Kelloe - it's where Wm Benson was baptized and his baptismal entry shows his mum's maiden surname - I found this in the Durham BTs at: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1309819
However, the FS hits I'm going to give were all found at: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1473015
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXP6-CVC GS Film number: 1514663 Sometimes, it's necessary to do a catalog search at FS for the film # - here it shows: Parish registers for Kelloe, 1693-1905 Author: Church of England. Parish Church of Kelloe
Marriage certificate for: Name: REILLY, Catharine Year: 1875 Other index entries for this marriage: HARRISON, Thomas Register No. - Entry No. - District DNRLAN8 entry 39
My guess is this is the Lanchester registrar's own register, but this doesn't necesssarily mean it was a rego office marr.
Pre-1899, only C of E (C of W in Wales), jews and quakers (and the registrar) were authorized to keep official marr rego's. If a non-conformist marr took place, then the registrar would have to attend so the marr could be completed by the couple signing his official register. Post-1898, non-conformists (except RCs until the 1980s) could be authorized to keep official marr rego's, although the proces might take a couple of years. The lack of an official marr rego doesn't stop the church from keeping its own private rego, which would be later deposited in some archive, and might have the same info as an official entry (course, it could have less, or more, info)
Here's an RC exanple: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNKB-QSJ Church records, 1809-1988 Author: Catholic Church. St. Mary's, Bridge Street (Sunderland, Durham)
and the matching local hit: Surname Forename Year Index Number ANDERSON Mary 1871 M34/52 Click to view spouse details Spouse : WILLEY John 1871 [from which I infer M is the code for the Sunderland registrar's own rego]
