Hello Elizabeth, have you tried to trace living descendants of his siblings? Stories are often passed down- they may have more information for you.

have you done anything about looking for info about a prior marriage?

Do you have the cert of the marriage to your mother?

When did they marry?

What does it say about his 'status'...and his father's name etc?

What was your father's occupation?

Thank you everyone who tried to help re Robert Stitt.
Robert Stitt born Liverpool 1905 was my father. The unsolved part of his life is that when he married my mother they married in the name of STETT. He died in 1979 , we thought he was 64 when infact he was 74yrs old!! His National Insurance wa s inthe name os STITT. The marriage certificate shows that he said he was 22yrs old when infact he was 32.. My mother was 18.
He never spoke about any family. He said he was born onboard a ship going to Canada which was untrue .My parents were divorced and my mother will not discuss anything about him.
So my two sisters and I feel that he had a hidden past and had possibly been married before. Therefore when I read of a Robert Stitt going to Canada of the same age it set me wondering if there was a connection.
Sorry to have wasted everyones time on this.
Thank you

A tree at Ancestry has this as one of his children, they also have the MMN as Agnes Morrison. The child below is shown as dying in 2010 and as they have the full DOD I should think they have the death certificate

You say he was possibly your father. Is he named on your birth certificate? Did he marry your mother before or after you were born?

MargaretM

This looks like him heading back to Glasgow. Address he's going to is 433 Crown St. Last permanent residence was USA. He's a machinist, same as on 1930 census. Middle initial is E on original.

I realise the matter is probably delicate if Ann is looking for her father and it's up to her what she wants to share regards who/where/when.

Just in case this is of any relevance:

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Robert Stitt
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Birth Year: abt 1901
Date of Arrival: 6 Jun 1916
Vessel: Cassandra
Port of Arrival: Quebec, Canada
Port of Departure: Glasgow, Scotland

He was a scholar and travelling with (presumably) mother Clara K age 55 and a female initial "C", a 23 year old typist. They were headed to Clara's un-named son at 2247 St Andrew Street, Montreal.

Same man as occupation and parent's address match the info Ann has.

So we are looking for a Canadian marriage between 1928 and ????? Is that correct?

Because of the Canadian privacy and closure laws it may be difficult. Depending on Province, records could be closed up to 100 years after the event

Adding Canada to your title would be helpful

Where and when did this man marry your mother?

Do you have a copy of the cert?

Is he named on your birth cert? Were you born before their marriage?

Can anyone please advise how to find a possible marriage in Canada!! All I have to go on is a Robert Stitt aged 24 left the Port of Greenock in March 1928 on the Ship Montrose which went to New Brunswick South East Canada. It says he was an engineer and his address in the UK WAS 260 Crown St Glasgow. He was possibly my father who might have been married when he married my mother.
Any advice for searching welcome.
Thank you
Ann
