The one in December is mine 1st cousin 2x removed...the other one is probably the "master seaman" and not sure it is any connection to me.

Potty thanks...I have sent my cousin an email to see if she knows anything and I have contacted the National Archives to see if it is possible to delve deeper into the records they hold. Everything I can find seems to suggest the RNR were already seamen. My grandad never was...he was a carpenter and latterly a publican.

Potty Report 8 Nov 2014 11:56

Jude, no reason that he couldn't have been in the RNR whilst living in Newport - men in the Reserve weren't serving, they were on stand-by and were the first to be called up in the event of war.

It's a comprehensive website Chris but I can't find a way of searching for specifics....so if you put in Lewis John Llewellyn it brings up articles containing Lewis and articles containing John and articles containing Llewellyn - about a million!

Chris this last one looked a possible (matching the RNR record I found but then I found this......

Name: Lieutenant RNR L J Llewellyn
Medal or Award: RN Long Service and Good conduct Medal
Service Year: 1923-1935

It is for the year 1925 and I am fairly sure that my grandad was living in Newport (seen the electoral rolls) and not serving in the RNR then. And there are a number of medals awarded and I am sure that if it had been him I would know of them. So I am going to put the whole thing to bed :-)

OK Chris Ho....the record I found is dated 21 May 1918 and is in the records Royal Naval Reserves (on Ancestry) for 1919 - I think this could possibly be him but where do I go from here?

No numbers just that he was a temporary transport officer third grade serving on the President.

There is a record on FMP for a Lewis John in 1929 but as he was discharged in the fifties it can't be my grandad as he was long dead by then.

Jacqueline I don't think either applies though obviously I don't know. But I am not sure it is quite appropriate?

The other Lewis Llewellyn born 1885 - I have as Roath rather than Pentyrch and as far as I can see he was in the Somerset Light Infantry. So maybe the master from Pentyrch is not mine at all - unfortunately Lewis and Llewellyn are all too common!

I suspect that the gaps as you all say are quite common especially around WW!. Also I personally think the 1911 question was quite intrusive (I wouldn't answer that question now!) so who knows what people answered then.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Remembering those who will not be forgotten this weekend

Thanks everyone - I'll have a look later. The Pentyrch guy is a cousin of sorts I think.

Chris I'll revisit the record later but don't think there are any numbers on it

Seems quite a common event in my family: 11 years between my brother and myself, the same gap between my sister's two children, and a 13 year gap between my mother and her next sibling.

The one born 1885 above became master of his ship and between 1905 and 1909 he lived at 11 Claude Rd., Cardiff. Also there was a Mr. Evan Williams.

His ship (SS Millicent Knight) was torpedoed in 1917 but he survived - at that time his address was 32 Australia Rd., Cardiff.

He married someone called Mabel around 1910.

It dfoesn't look as if he is 'yours' ??

Maybe the gaps were simply due to low fertility?

Or a low libido?

Jude

my grandparents were married in 1902, when grandmother was 19 and grandfather 17

my mum was born in 1903, eldest child

2nd child born 1910

3rd child 1915

Grandfather in WW1 from August 1916 to March 1919

4th, and last, child born 1923

so grandmother was 40 when the last child was born

Nothing was ever mentioned about babies who'd died, and most certainly not stillbirths or miscarriages.

Yes maybe - and how the hell one hundred years later do you sort that one out?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My other grandparents had two families - one pre-war and one post-war. And the post war births came thick and fast :-)

I suspect my dad was an accident (and the loveliest accident ever) given my nan was 44 when he was born. But I guess in those days there wasn't the science we have now....

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 6 Nov 2014 19:28

This was my grandad. I have every census, his birth, his marriage, his death and probate!

But I can't help thinking I am missing something.

My grandparents married in October 1902 and had two sons born Q1 1903 :-) and 1905.

In 1911 the two boys are living with their parents and there are no children who have died.

So next to be born was Isabella Adelaide in 1918

and then my dad in July 1926

Can't see any other possible births.

So why 13 years between my uncle Arch (Thomas Marchant) and my aunt Bella? And why another 8 years before my dad?

I can find a Royal Naval Reserve record showing a Lewis John Llewellyn serving on the President dated 21 May 1918 - how do I find more out about this to see if it could possibly be him? Bella was born 17 December that year.
