Bell Family of Slaggyford and Knaresdale

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Philippa

Philippa Report 4 Nov 2014 15:48

My father was evacuated during WW2 to stay with an 'Uncle Bell' who farmed at Slaggyford. He also mentioned going to Slaggyford by train for holidays during the 1930s and being met off the train by 'Uncle Bell' who was the Stationmaster there - presumably these are not both the same person. I have a book on the History of Slaggyford, written by T Bell in 1909; from the context, it seems he was station master at that point; perhaps the father of the 1939 station master? I've drawn a blank, as I don't have any idea of forenames, birth, marriage or death dates for them. Their wives' maiden names would probably be Atkinson or Scott. If anyone has any information on these folk, I would be so grateful. Also, any information on Knaresdale Primary School during WW2.

Friends re-united might be a place to start - It has a section for putting in names and schools attended - You might find a connection there to Knaresdale Primary School during that time??

Thank you all so much for your responses - I've been running round in circles for weeks, and now I have some really helpful leads in just a couple of hours! I now have more details on the Thomas Bell who wrote the book, and Hugh Bell very helpfully had my grandmother and great grandmother to stay in 1911, which has helped fill in some more gaps. Next time I get stuck, I'll ask the experts on this forum before wasting too much time, as you are obviously all much better at this than I am!

Shirley, thanks for the advice - when I saw the 'mark this as answered' I thought I was meant to reply to everyone (i.e. 'answer' them) individually! As you can tell, I'm new to this!
