Carol, I think it really is a long shot. Your grandfather was probably one of thousands of English soldiers who passed through Redford Barracks during WW1.

Not really sure how you can expect to find someone if you do not know their name

Do you mean that your grandfather was never married to your grandmother, and so his name is not on their child's birth certificate?

Welcome to the boards Carol, you should be able to find your grandfather's name on your parents marriage cert or on the birth cert of which ever parent he was the father of. Do you have either of those certs?

We really do need more information Carol.

You must know something about him ? Which one of your parents was his child ?

Can you please give us all you know and we can then make a start for you.

This is a very long shot but would be grateful for any help. I do not know the name of my Grandfather but know he was in Edinburgh during 1917 and was possibly killed in 1918. I presume he was with the army and I think he was english.
