Andrew Report 29 Oct 2014 23:03

Hi,
I found my ancestor, John South Phillips born in 1823 in Great Barton Suffolk. His parents were John and Mary Phillips. I also found his wives and their 8 children.
Although I drove back to Great Barton to the Parish Church and found another grave. His name was Ernest Beynon born in 1914. His mother maiden name was Cornell. So was it my ancestor John South Phillips or else was it John Phillips my great great great granddad born 1817? Thanks and I will wait for your reply. Regards Andrew.

Sorry - what has Ernest Beynon 1914 mmn Cornell have to do with either of the John Phillips?

Who was your earliest confirmed ancestor ie the child born to John or John South Phillips? Do you have certificates to lend support to your previous choice ie a MC with the full name of the father or even better a BC? How about baptism records?

Just for info, as I am confused over what you mean:

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007
Ernest Beynon Phillips
Birth Date: 25 Jun 1914
Date of Registration: Mar 1997 Age at Death: 82
Registration district: Bury St edmunds Inferred County: Suffolk
Register Number: C16D District and Subdistrict: 7421C Entry Number: 221

so not this birth:
Births Sep 1914
Phillips Ernest B Rosser Swansea 11a 2419

Added;
cannot see any Ernest with mmn Cornell birth.

Well, at least you've sorted out that his surname was Phillips, Patchem :-)

Yes, well, awaiting clarification.

Meanwhile, Andrew has, I think, this Ernest in his tree on here:

Births Sep 1914
Phillips Ernest G Webb Bury St.E. 4a 1841

(born Great Barton according to the tree).

Who may have these parents, but Phillips/Webb is an incredibly common marriage or birth combination:
Marriages Sep 1911
Phillips William Bury St. E. 4a 1945
Webb Rose E Bury St. E. 4a 1945

Added:
But this looks like his death:
Deaths Jun 1918
Phillips Ernest G 3 Bury St.E. 4a 902

Am sure we covered John South Phillips (amongst others) not long ago, and perhaps once before that!...(not remembering Ernest!)

I'm confused, Andrew. You say that your ancestor was John South Phillips born 1823 but you also say that your gt.gt. gt. grandad John Phillips was born 1817. Are you saying that he's the father of John South Phillips? He had a son when he was 7 years old?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 30 Oct 2014 11:19

The way I read it was that Andrew originally thought that John South Phillips 1823 was his direct line Ancestor. Now he has discovered that there is another John, John Phillips - b 1817 and wonders if he made a wrong assumption.

We've all come to that junction at some point - which direction to go?

MargaretM Report 30 Oct 2014 11:48

But surely that's easily solved, Det, by finding the child of John from whom Andrew descends on the censuses? It should say whether his father was born 1817 or 1823.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 30 Oct 2014 12:02

That would depend when 'John' died.
As we know, the 1841 rounded the ages and, at least with my family, didn't give middle names.

Pure speculation - we need to wait untl Andrew comes back to clarify.
