Given that ages on the 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 then this obituary from the Carlisle Journal dated 09 June 1848 probably explains a bit more about his financial situation. |

Yes, I believe it does stand for independent, and I think it might mean "of Independent means" i.e. doesn't do paid work |

In 1851 Eleanor Wasdale is a widow and gives herself as an Annuitant and in 1861 gives herself as a Land Proprietor. So it is possible her husband was independent. |
