I am trying to find any information on the family of my G-G-Great Grandmother Elizabeth Horton. I know she married Phillip Woodhall (not sure when) and found them in the 1871 census living in West Bromwich, Staffordshire with their children Philip (b. 1850), Eliza, George, John Sam, James, Isaiah, and Mary A. They went on to have two more daughters, Elizabeth and Edith (b. 1874). I believe Elizabeth and the children immigrated to New York in 1878. The 1900 US Census says she was born in June 1837, but her gravestone says 1836. The stone is also where I discovered the name Horton. I'm interested in finding any info on her parents or any of her Horton family. Thanks in advance!

and that is explained by the fact that YOUR Elizabeth, Elizabeth Horton, did not marry Philip until 1860
from freebmd.org.uk
Marriages Jun 1860 (>99%)
Horton Elizabeth Kings N. 6c 655 WOODHALL Philip Kings N 6c 655
Possible first marriage for Philip ..............
Marriages Jun 1841 (>99%)
HANCOCKS Elizabeth W Bromwich 18 653 WOODHALL Philip W Bromwich 18 653
possible death of the first Elizabeth .......
Deaths Mar 1860 (>99%) Woodhall Elizabeth W Bromwich 6b 469
This means that Elizabeth Hancocks was probably the mother of the following children ..............
Ann Woodhall 17 b.ca 1844, West Bromwich William Woodhall 15 b.ca 1846, West Bromwich Philip Woodhall 21 b.ca 1850, West Bromwich Eliza Woodhall 18 b.ca 1853, West Bromwich George Woodhall 13 b.ca 1858, West Bromwich
and Elizabeth Holman was the mother of the children born after 1861

all the records I have posted, apart form the freebmd one, are form ancestry.co.uk
There are several family trees on ancestry for the Woddhall family ...................... one does have to be very careful of ancestry trees because many of them do not show documentation fro thir assertations :-) But they can be useful as a guideline
According to one of them .................... the date of arrival in the US varies depending on the year of the US Census
In the 1900 US Census, it was 1877
In the 1910 US Census, it was 1878
In the 1920 US Census, it was 1875

it depends on which child you are descended from as to whether your G-G-Great Grandmother is Elizabeth Horton or Elizabeth Hancocks

Thank you so much for all the information! I'm new to exploring my UK roots, so I need all the help I can get. I'm descended through John Samuel Woodhall, born 1861 so I guess I'm on the right track with Elizabeth Horton. I had seen mention of the two oldest children, William and Ann, on another's family tree but knew she would have been too young to be their mother so I didn't add them to my tree. But now it makes sense :) And yes- that's the stone I was referring too.
