unfortunately I think his birth was registered as 'male wood'...so not easy to decide which one is him.

I871 Census states Dorothy 59 and Joseph 60 Dorothy born in Oldham on this, but i believe Shaw is part of Oldham, thanks

If they had children then the best way to find a mothers surname is to get a childs birth cert. as it should be recorded on there

Robert could you post the 1871 census you have found just for reference please as there is more than one couple with same names.
How old were they both in 1871?

I am trying to find the Dorothy that married Joseph Wood, according to 1871 Census her name was Wood, but of course this may be her married name!
the only Dorothy that I have come accross on Ancestry born at the same time, or within a year in birth records and born in Shaw Lancashire, as on census 1861 is for Dorothy Bardoly, also have found no marriage records, either in Lancashire (Scammonden) in Huddersfield, Is this likely to be the same Dorothy?
