No offence intended but thank you for the suggestions. I'll mull this one over!

Trouble is Sylvia that the name of the Farm is not mentioned in the article so it does make it difficult to find anything at all.

You could always try emailing the library in Higham Ferrers to see if they have any old literature about the farmland in general in the 1780's. You never know what they might have in their archives. This is their email address:-

Peter

I'm sorry if you don't like my suggestion

but it is exactly what I would do ................. google the name of the farm or area to see what I could find.

I hope you realise that the chance of someone knowing exactly what that piece is about just happening by this post is, well, infinitesmal!

so you are relying on the, possibly, 2-5% of GR members who help on these Boards having an idea of where to look ..........................

my suggestion is as valid as anyone else's ............

............ particularly if you have indeed not looked at the image as Kathleen seems to think.

Yeah that is what I thought - hmmmm, a little odd but also very interesting!

I think the three people mentioned were probably just three well respected people who lived in the surrounding areas who had been given details of what was to be auctioned.

The other two people apart from James Smitheringale appear to be landlords of pubs.

Mr. Thomas Collins of the Saracens Head in Northampton and Mr. Wood at the Queens Head in Higham Ferrers, although Stamford seems a bit further away from these two places.

Hmmm yes, I agree. I wonder if James Smitheringale is a son in law? Maybe just a trusty friend?

You would really need the name of the farm to be able to get any further and that isn't mentioned in the article either.

Thank you Kath - I did suspect so. However, I come here to hear the views of others.

I wonder if there would be a sale document that would mention the owner? Or perhaps some deeds? Just nice to see a mention of my rather elusive ancestor James Smitheringale.

I think Sylvia is simply suggesting that you use Google or any other search engine to see if you can find anything.

Sorry?

Ity doesn't mention the owner's name in the article. It just says he is old and infirm which is why he is quitting the business.

I think you have mixed up three separate auction lots in what you have posted above.

The bit about the County Hospital at the beginning and the bit about the auction on Tuesday 29th July at the end are separate auction lots.

It doesn't say "Tue" Farm (as you have written). It just says "The" farm. It looks as if you have just looked at the transcription (which isn't very good) instead of looking at the image which makes much more sense.

Hi there,

I am wondering if I can find out who was the owner of the farm up for sale in the following article?

I COUNTY-HOSPITAL, Northampton, Jul< 26, 1783. THIS is to give Notice, That the Annual Stated Couit of the Governors of
Particulars, enquire Mr. Tho at the Saracen's - Head, Northampton; Mr. Wood, t the .'s-Head, in Highaai-F errers; Mr. James Smitheringale, of Stamford. N. B. Tue Farm is within fix Mi'es of four Corn- Markets. SOLD by AUCTION, Mr. X Leice/ler, Tuefday the Tuly
28 July 1783 - Northampton Mercury - Northampton, Northampto

Also, who would the three men be who are printed to ask about enquiries? I think James Smitheringale is my ancestor.

Best wishes,

Peter
