Yes Rootgather - all correct!

John's parents were William Gordon, a farmer and Bridget McKean, both deceased.

Can you give us the names of John Gordon's parents please? They will be on his death certificate if the informant knew the details.

Do you mean that James b. 1836 died in Middlesborough, Yorkshire in 1874 please?

Peter Report 13 Oct 2014 18:31

Thank you - although would James Gordon's death index give his age at death? It does annoy me the seperation between the statutory documents in GB.

Anyway, thanks Ann but James (my ancestor) was the son of John and Mary, not Ellen.

Thank you though - any other ideas?

Hi there - my ancestor, named GORDON, lived in Coatbridge in the 1850s/1860s. My ancestor James Gordon (b 1836 Ireland - d 1874 Middlesbrough) married in Coatbridge RC Church in 1865.

His father John Gordon (1788 - 1861 at Coatbridge) died at an explosion at the Dundyvan Iron Works in Coatbridge and the inquest described him as John Gordon or John McGurnen.

I suspect he was an Irish immigrant named McGurnen and changed his name to Gordon, a traditional Scottish name, to 'fit in'.

However, I've found this GORDON who also worked at Dundyvan Iron Works and lived in Coatbridge - do you think there might be a connection?

Thanks,

Peter
