Thank you for all this information - I will follow it all up. Thank you Cynthia for your assistance. I would not have known I had all these replies. Will follow your advice. If anyone is interested in the history of Joseph Hopwood (son of Peter Hopwood) after his arrival in Tasmania, please contact me as we have the family history. |

I just wanted to update my searching re Peter Hopwood. I had a lot of help from many people as a result of my original post and would like to advise that I have had some small successes. I found the marriage for Peter Hopwood and Mary Turner - they were married 4th November,1823 at St. Johns Church, Manchester. The church has now gone and gardens are in the place of the church. I then had a think about Peter and Mary's son, Joseph (my husband's ancestor), as on his sentencing papers, his mother's column has a dash as if she had either left the family or died. I then found a death for a Mary Hopwood on 5th June 1848 and I sent for the death certificate. It was our Mary as she is listed as the wife of Peter Hopwood. Peter Hopwood was present at the death and she died at the age of 36 years of consumption at Garden Street. I have discovered that "Garden Street" was a small hospital that looked after patients with TB. |
