S.S. Empire Success

Please could anyone help me confirm George Ernest Brewer was Lost at sea after the S.S.Empire Success was Bombed 1st October 1940 of Peterhead or any of the others lost that day. Thank You very Much

Empire Success

Empire Success was a 5,988 GRT cargo ship which was built by Vulkan Werke, Hamburg. Completed in 1921 as Hagen for Hamburg America Line. Seized on 8 September 1939 at Durban by the South African Navy. To the South African Government and renamed Ixia. Bombed on 30 September 1940 at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire and damaged. To MoWT, repaired and renamed Empire Success. Laid up in January 1948 at Liverpool after a collision. Uneconomic to repair and scuttled on 22 August 1948 in the Bay of Biscay with a cargo of obsolete chemical ammunition.

George E. Brewer aged 25 sailor died 1st October 1940 (the day after the bombing) He is listed as living in Hull at 8 Ions Avenue, Villa Place, and is buried in Northern Cemetery Hull.
The other is Hubert Hedley Robinson OBE aged 58, Master who died on 19th February 1945 and listed as living in Wimborne Minster, Dorset and is buried in Colbury (Christ Church) Graveyard, his son John Victor Robinson was also killed on 28th August 1942 while serving as a Sergeant in the RAF.

DRURY, Deck Boy, FRED, S.S. Empire Success (London). Merchant Navy. 8th December 1940. Age 16. Son of Joseph Harrison Drury and Elma Jane Drury, of Hessle. Buried Haltemprice (Hessle) Cemetery. 51. Plot 4. Grave 5.

Cargo ship Empire Success, 5,988grt, (MOWT) loaded with a general cargo for Hull via Aberdeen sailed from Freetown in the Liverpool bound 39 ship Convoy SL-47 which departed Freetown on the 10th September 1940 and arrived safely on the 28th, while the Empire Success continued on to Aberdeen. On the 30th September, five miles off Peterhead, Aberdeenshire the ship was attacked by German bombers and although not seriously damaged there were a number of seriously wounded crew onboard when the ship eventually arrived in port. Four of the crew including the Captain would eventually die from their injuries.

For anyone serving in the forces after WW1, their records will still be held by the MOD. Don't bother with the Forces Reunited Site - they won't have the service records.You can apply for his service records from the MOD - there's a charge, though, and you might be in for a long wait. Details of how to apply are here
