Mavis- perhaps the father of Florence was an Arthur Hicks -see discussion on previous pages, then go and lie down in a darkened room :-D

Good find Christina!

I was having thoughts about there being 3 Louisa's

the one in 1881 19 y dos'nt quite fit Louisa Churchill -- she always quotes
St Pancras as place of birth. --as said she is in Marylebone where Arthur
was born.
But why choose Hick[s] as a surname ???

Yes Broomstick...

The 1874 marriage is Louisa Mark I PEARCE

The 1899 marriage is Louisa Mark II CHURCHILL

As far as we can all see Louisa Churchill never actually married John Hurwood - she just assumed his name. Whilst Louisa PEARCE remarried as Louisa Hurwood, widow, to Arthur Hearne when she wasn't actually a widow ;-)

John Hurwood would have been the only father Florence knew so that is no surprise.

I think the birth certificate of Arthur would be a good purchase.

You have certainly got a well weaved tangle here!

I think my head is going to explode ......lol

Gritty
I had seen that one of Louisa as a servant as it is in the right area

Jude

I have a marriage cert for John Hurwood to Louisa Pearce 1874

I have a marriage cert for Louisa Hurwood to Edward Plumb 1899

The marriage cert for my great grandmother states John Hurwood deceased French polisher

I think I will send for the birth cert of Arthur Hicks born 1884 to see what appears on that

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 28 Sep 2014 09:02

Well..all joking aside, In that 1881 census Louisa aged 19 artist's model, gives her place of birth as Chapel Grove Middlesex not St Pancras as in other censuses

But it is possible that there was a Chapel Grove IN St Pancras (Googling it brings up a reference)

John could've given the information on the 1881 census- you know what men are like for not knowing 'stuff'. - ooh forgot to add, Louisa Churchill was also in Marylebone in 1881, where her son Arthur was born a few years later.

Dea

Dea Report 28 Sep 2014 08:50

I agree Gritty - people were ofter listed twice if they were away from home - once where they were visiting and again at their home address.

However, the Louisa with John is only 19 on 1881 which fits in with the age of Louisa Churchill (Louisa Mark II), whereas the one away visiting with the Smith's is aged 24 which fits exactly with Louisa Pearce (Mark I)

Not sure yet how your Louisa Churchill - servant on 1881 fits in ? - Maybe 'she' was the one who was recorded twice??

Still confusing but I feel we are almost there now ;-) :-D

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 28 Sep 2014 08:43

Ah good Gritty....but she obviously lied somewhat about her age if that is the case with the one with John as she is 19 (1862) when Louisa Pearce was born 1856.

Of course there is another explanation.....there is third Louisa lol! :-)

OK- Wow, I'm so impressed. the Pearce/ Hurwood/ Hearn is amazing work

but...
I think the Louisa with John in 1881 is his original wife (nee Pearce)- she may be registered twice if she was visiting people. I think this could be Louisa Churchill in 1881, before she had children (and before any connection with John Hurwood)

Louisa Churchill
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relationship to Head: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: St Pancras, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Marlebone
County/Island: London
Street address: 13a Margaret St
Occupation: General Servant
Registration district: Marylebone
Sub-registration district: All Souls
ED, institution, or vessel: 5a
Piece: 134
Folio: 16
Page Number: 26
Household Members:
Mary Lonsdale 40
Ann Lonsdale 36
Mary Warm??P 24
Louisa Moody 19
Mary A. Moody 15
Susan Hepditch 15
Louisa Churchill 19

I suspect she [Louisa Churchill] had two children (possibly with an Arthur Hicks) before meeting John (who probably thought it was extremely lucky that she had the same name as his first wife, as they could pretend to be married quite easily?!)

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 28 Sep 2014 08:36

No broomstick..

the Louisa who married Arthur Hearn was Louisa Pearce.

The Louisa who married Edward Plumb was Louisa Churchill

The Louisa in 1891 census is Louisa Churchill but it also seems that the Louisa with John in 1881 was also Louisa Churchill - i.e. we never actually find Louisa Pearce WITH John Hurwood!

But it opens up another can of worms as to why between 1881 and 1891 she had two children by Arthur (maybe) Hicks!

broomstick

broomstick Report 28 Sep 2014 08:35

Also on the marriage cert to Edward Plumb she states her father as Henry Churchill??
I am now wondering if I have gone wrong somewhere??
Thought I was on a winner at last tracking down my great grandmothers birth cert what a can of worms I seemed to have opened............

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 28 Sep 2014 08:33

Good find Dei...but does that mean that this is Louisa Mark II?

John Hurwood
Age: 27
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1854
Relationship to Head: Head
Spouse: Louisa Hurwood
Gender: Male
Where born: Lambeth (I S), Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Islington
County/Island: London
Street address: 22 Albion St
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: French Polisher
Registration district: Islington
Sub-registration district: Islington West
ED, institution, or vessel: 20
Piece: 230
Folio: 19
Page Number: 31
Household Members:
Name Age
John Hurwood 27
Louisa Hurwood 19 born Chapel Grove, Middlesex, England Artists Model (Art Service)

So she had the two children in 1883 and 1886 (not with John Hurwood) and was already living as Mrs Hurwood :-0 :-0 :-0 :-0 :-0

You are all very good at this I wish I was!!!

So the 1891 census that has John Hurwood, Louisa Hurwood, Arthur Churchill Hurwood and Florence Anne Hurwood is the same Louisa who married Arthur Hearn then Edward Plumb ???
Have I got that right ????

Dea Report 28 Sep 2014 08:23

I had already found this Louisa on 1881 who I am now certain is Louisa (nee Pearce):

The children have not yet been born... but, in any case, they were probably the children of the other Louisa (Churchill, not Pearce !)
