Why would my ancestor live at a vicarage and be recorded as a butter factor?

No idea Margaret. Would you care to publish their name so we could take a look? Perhaps it is mistranscribed or their parent worked at the vicarage? They may be the child of the vicar and that is their occupation.

Welcome to the boards, Margaret!

Could it be butler rather than butter? Have you looked at the image, and not just the transcription?

If you post some details to enable us to find the census record, we can have a look at it.

Many thanks for offering to help. I found the details in the transcription not the image. His name was Stephen Blakey, Thornton steward, North Yorkshire, his address the vicarage and butter factor his occupation. I'm relatively new to this and my apologies for the tardiness of my reply.

If you look at the image, there is nothing to say that he is living in a Vicarage

Always best to check the image, as transcribers can make errors

NO address is actually recorded for anyone on the page, or on either of the 2 preceding pages.

The Vicarage is the address for ONE family with Schedule number 11

the transcriber has made a hash of things

I can't see that he's living at a vicarage. His occupation is butter factor. His son Isaac, 20, single, a tailor is living with him.

In 1851 the vicarage was the last address recorded on the census - quite a few houses (and pages) away from Stephen

The address vicarage is on many pages before and no addresses after that so someone has assumed that the address is still the vicarage.

Thanks everybody. Well that's a lesson learnt, always look at the original. This one kept me wondering. Glad to clear it up before I visit the place. You lot are phenomenal.
