You could try searching on the Kent archives site - copies of wills are often deposited with archive centres.

Hi Gwyn

Good idea Gwyn. The Debocks appear to have been artisans and not well off. I used FMP and searched the records relating to Wills and Probate. Using a D*b*k* search I did find a few with names like Deback, Debok but none related to Sandwich or Margate families.

Am I looking at the right website. Are there other ways of searching for Wills and Probate?

Did any of them leave Wills, which might help with identifying families?

Hi Chris and Gins

Yes those records you have found are the ones I'm refering to. I use FMP and LDS's Family Search a lot and I also found that useful extracted summary on Rootsweb Archiver of Debock church records Sandwich. I'm basically saying given those church records when you try to link them up into a family tree you get lots of questions about how certain you can be. It's relatively easy to collect together a nuclear family of man, wife and offspring but when you try to link that man to a birth record some 20 to 50 years earlier there's not much certainty. And when you look at an image of the church record often there are no extra clues. If you are lucky there are witness names.
So that leaves the Huguenot Society - it seems I have to buy the CDs before I know whether they contain what I'm looking for.

Alicia

I'm trying to put together a Debock family tree for the Debocks of Sandwich and Margate, Kent (aka De Bock, Debeke, Deboke, Deboak). Debock is a Walloon-Huguenot name and they arrived in Sandwich in the 1600s. This family chose from a small number of first names so it can be difficult to distinguish them. Sandwich had 3 Anglican parishes (St Peter, St Mary, St Clement) and the Debocks appear in all 3.

My gggg grandmother Hannah Debock b 1780 was the child of Isaac and Ann Debock. I'm fairly sure that Ann Debock's maiden name was Alderstone as an Isaac Debock and Ann Alderstone were married 1777. The Isaac Debock that married Ann Alderstone could be
(1) Isaac son of Thomas and Ann Debock chr 5 Nov 1746 St Peter, Sandwich
(2) Isaac son of Isaac and Mary Debock chr 26 Nov 1738 St Mary, Sandwich
What records should I look for that will help me distinguish between these 2 Debocks and other Debocks and link the generations together more definitely? If only there were census records for the 1700s!
