MC - thanks for that - I'd never scrolled down & seen those docs.
My dad's cousin has another tab - concentration (his body was initially buried close to where he fell, and later, when the cemetery constructed, all such temporary burials were reburied in the main cemetery).

To decode the WW1 map ref for the initial burial, see:

When you're looking on CWGC don't just read the basic info as posted above, scroll down the page and look at the other info that is there. If the poor man's body was recovered for burial (as opposed to being commemorated on a memorial) then there should be headstone registers. If you're lucky then a contact name will be shown for the headstone details.

In the case of Gunner G Wood, died 12 Aug 1917, there IS a contact - it's Mrs F Wood, 6 Boundary Street, Longsight, Oldham.

So, Mrs F Wood could be Florence Dickinson.

Hi Sue,

I've just been to have a look at the newspapers on film at the local interest centre. This report was in The Oldham Weekly Chronicle on 20th October 1917.

GUNNER GILES WOOD

Gunner Giles Wood (14012) R.F.A. of Mulliner Street, Oldham, was killed in action on August 12th, when a German shell (burst?) behind a gunpit killing him and wounding two other gunners. He was 25, and enlisted at the beginning of the war. He was well known at the Woodstock (spinning?) Co.'s mill but before he enlisted worked at Oldham Gas Works. He leaves a widow and one child
